New Neon Elegance, and Acan ID

Been Reefin'
Hey all I was just taking a few pics, and thought I would share this week old Elegance. I was looking at it at the lfs and was going to pass it up because of some stories about then not doing good in captivity, but I was with a friend and they said it is so nice I will buy it for you. So what could I say...

I also picked this echinata up. When I got home and compared the piece to the one I already had they look somewhat different. Are they different any idea what the id would be? Rotundofora?

Wow, incredible elegance. I love those corals but elegance cost about $200 for a medium sized piece here in the UK.

Thanks Javeo and Julio. There was a couple and it was the best color of all. I just hope it does good in my system. Crazy they cost $200 for medium piece. I would go broke with those prices, haha...

Theres a quota limit in the UK coz they are getting rarer. Ive only ever seen 4 of these in all the shops Ive been to.

Dang didn't realize they where getting rare. Maybe you will luck onto a mislabeled one sometime...lol

No chance here, we get ripped of for everything. Even bubbles, hammer corals are $50 and up for standard pieces

The entire Euphyllia genus will be going up in price from now on, for everyone. CITES has IIRC dropped the limit to all time lows on them. It's not just the UK that the prices will be going up on.

Are you 100% that the UK is putting the limits on yah, or rather, CITES. I've never heard of a country limitting coral imports in quota type numbers. Usually, they either allow it (under CITES quota limitts and permits) or don't.

If that elegance is on the rock work, as it appears to be, you need to move it down, into the sand bed.

nice peices btw.

That could be a problem, I don't have a sandbed. What are the consiquences of this?

I can move it onto the starboard.

Elecance corals are found in nature in the sand, their skeleton is shaped to porvide a sturdy base buried in the sand.

When they are placed on hard substrates, it tends to irritate, and or tear the flesh, and could lead to infections.

To properly care for it, you should provide it with as close to its natureal habitat as possible, ie sand.

well you could always try this. take a 6"x6" tupperwear container and epoxy rock rubble on the sides of it. then put it in your tank at the base of your rockwork. then put a few random medium to small rocks around it to incorporate it into your aquascaping. then just add sand to the small cubby youve created. the elegance will be happy and within a few months the entire thing will be coralline covered and perfectly blend into your rockwork.

The both look like echinata. The newer one is more closed up. You can see a few teeth on the corallites. Once it settles in, it will inflate and look more like you other piece. But they won't look identical, since one piece is captive grown from a couple polyps, while the other piece could be a wild chunk.(though it too looks like a captive grown coral)
In my experience, echinatas grown from a few polyps into a larger coral look different than a wild piece.

That is what I would do if I wanted to keep this in a bb tank.
