New NHL Rules OT

Not sure if any of you remember but there used to be this game called hockey. Looks like they are going to start playing it again. I really didn't care about the money issues but thought the game was in need of some big changes.
Here are the changes if you care.

The following rules changes will take effect for the 2005-06 NHL season:

Dimensions of the rink
3821502_36_1.gif

The neutral-zone edges of the blue lines will be positioned 64 feet from the attacking goal line and 75 feet from the end boards in the attacking zone. The addition of four feet in each of the offensive zones should encourage more offensive play, particularly on power plays.

The goal lines will be positioned 11 feet from the end boards, two feet closer to the end boards than previously.

The size of the neutral zone will be reduced to 50' from 54'.

The blue lines and center line will remain 12 inches in width.

Fewer stoppages, increased "flow"

3821508_36_1.gif

Passes from behind the defensive blue line to the attacking blue line will be considered legal. The center red line will be ignored for purposes of the "two-line pass".

3821514_36_1.gif

The Tag-up Rule" will permit play to continue if offensive players who preceded the puck into the zone return to the blue line and "tag" it.

Icing the puck

Icing the puck offenses still will be penalized by a face-off in the defensive zone of the team that ices the puck.

A team that ices the puck cannot make a line change prior to the ensuing face-off.

"Touch" icing will remain the practice, although the Linesman will have discretion to wave off apparent icing infractions if they are deemed the result of an attempted pass. Providing the discretion to the Linesman also should have the effect of reducing the number of situations in which a race for the puck might result in an injury to a player.

Instigator rule

A player who instigates a fight in the final five minutes of a game will receive a game misconduct and an automatic one-game suspension. The length of suspension would double for each additional incident.

As well, the player's Coach will be fined $10,000 ââ"šÂ¬Ã¢â‚¬Â a fine that would double for each such incident.

Limits on goaltenders

The dimensions of goaltender equipment will be reduced by approximately 11 percent. In addition to a one-inch reduction (to 11") in the width of legpads, the blocking glove, upper-body protector, pants and jersey also will be reduced in size.

3821522_36_1.gif

Goaltenders may play the puck behind the goal line only in a trapezoid-shaped area defined by lines that begin six feet from either goal post and extend diagonally to points 28 feet apart at the endboards.

Officiating points of emphasis

Zero tolerance on Interference, Hooking and Holding/Obstruction.

Goaltenders who play the puck behind the goal line but outside the designated puck-handling area will be penalized for delay of game.

Goaltenders will be penalized for delaying the game if they "freeze" the puck unnecessarily.

Any player who shoots the puck directly over the glass in his defending zone will be penalized for delay of game.

Shootout

Following a scoreless five-minute overtime, three players from each team participate in the order the coach selects.

Each team takes three shots. The team with the most goals after those six shots is the winner.

If the score remains tied, the shootout will proceed to a "sudden death" format.

Regardless the number of goals scored during the shootout portion of overtime, the final score recorded for the game will give the winning team one more goal than its opponent, based on the score at the end of overtime.

Unsportsmanlike conduct

In addition to the minor penalty for unsportsmanlike conduct/diving that may be assessed by the Referee during a game, Hockey Operations will review game videos and assess fines to players who dive or embellish a fall or a reaction, or who feign injury in an attempt to draw penalties.

The first such incident will result in a warning letter being sent to the player.

The second such incident will result in a $1,000 fine.

The third such incident will result in a $2,000 fine.

The fourth such incident will result in a one-game suspension.

Public complaints or derogatory comments toward the game also will result in fines.

Sorry Gary, it was late and I was tired. I know you read the whole thing expecting some kind of Brian take at the end but it's just the facts man, just the facts.

It is me, I swear.

It is!

Ok, Baseball sucks and Del will be as smart as Albert once he quits wasting his time with the Rockies!

Now do you believe me?

Great information. I was waiting to see what the final rules were! I especially like the tag-up rule for offsides, and the center line exclusion from two-line passes, those two calls really slowed things down.

Are they instituting other fighting restrictions, or just in the last five minutes to keep people from trying to stop the clock? I had heard they may try to really restrict fighting overall. I can see the fighting rules to draw more widespread support, but a well-executed fight is part of the game in my opinion (no sucker punches or anything, just a good, clean, well-deserved fight, i.e. opposing player has been a jerk the whole game or tries to hurt your captain). I can see the last five minutes rule, though, I am just glad that it looks like they are not trying to eliminate all fights.

Maybe I can add hockey back in as one of my interests ;)

Good take Christina, I agree with the fights. No fights = more nasty stick work. I take the fights for sure. I think the last 5 minute rule is to help avoid the stuff like what happened to Moore a couple of seasons ago. The last 5 minutes of that game was a riot. I look forward to see what kind of team the Avs can put together spending 40 mil. I really hope they can get 21 back. I really want to see what he can with them opening up the ice a bit. If he's playing with the Avs that is.
Brian

I know, Foresburg is our favorite, we have a Swedish postage stamp to commemorate his gold-medal winning goal. I had heard he got injured, again, playing overseas, but that was a while ago, have you heard anything more recent? If he didn't play so hard, we wouldn't love him so much, but he also wouldn't get injured as often!

He hurt his wrist then came back and got a concussion from what I heard was a cheap shot in his first game back. I guess it looked really bad. His dad jumped on all the papers saying he's son was done playing hockey. Didn't think he would ever play again after that hit but I think he came back and played in the last couple of playoff games. I think he is ok, well as ok as somebody can be with no spleen, bad ankles, a bad wrist and doesn't remember where he lives cause of five concussions.
Brian

Did he come back and play again? I hadn't heard that. I did hear that he had said that he would like to come back to the Avs if they could offer him enough money.

If anybody can pull it off, it's Lacroix, but Forsberg, Sakic, and Blake = one great big chunk of the salary cap. I guess we'll see....

This is what I had read but looks like it was wrong.

Update, March 14: As expected, reports of a career-ending concussion were greatly exaggerated. The Denver Post says Forsberg will be back on the ice tonight, for game six of MoDo's playoff series against Farjestad.

Update II: The Denver Post did not get it right either. Forsberg watched from the bleachers as MoDo was eliminated form the playoffs.

STOCKHOLM, Sweden -- With injured star Peter Forsberg watching from the stands, MoDo was eliminated Monday night from the Swedish Elite League playoffs.

Forsberg

Former NHL player Jonas Hoglund started a three-goal rally within a span of 2:48 in the third period and Farjestad beat MoDo 3-2 to win the best-of-seven quarterfinal series in six games.

Forsberg, the 2003 NHL MVP, was forced to miss his second straight game because of the concussion his sustained when he was cross-checked by former NHL player Peter Nordstrom. Nordstrom also missed the last two games, which the teams split, because of a suspension

How is any of this reef related???? I'm as big an Avs fan as the next guy but c'mon, there are forums that are specific to the Avs...

Sorry, don't read it.

How hard is it to look at the title and see that it is not reef related. I don't think I tricked you into opening it. Or is this another attempt to take control of RMRC on my part with some hidden agenda?
Being part of the club, just want to share some hockey thoughts with others in Colorado, get over it Eric.

And don't hijack my thread, this is a hockey post not a Fundamental Club questions thread, that was last month.:)

What does this mean????

What a joke...You sat here and criticized me for not taking our reef club in CS seriously and all you do is post stuff that is off topic. You add nothing to the reef related climate this should be. Not trying to start anything with you Brian, just pointing out the hypocrisy in your previous comments.

Don't think I ever criticized you for not taking CS reef club seriously. We just didn't agree with the direction of the club and that was ok. You know exactly what you wanted out of the club and I understood that and all was good. So if you feel I criticized you in regards to not taking the club/hobby seriously, I apologize for that. I have seen your tank and I know how serious you are about the hobby.

It just seems to be that whenever somebody doesn't agree with what your thoughts are, it's because they have a hidden agenda. Don't know if that's valid or not, JMHO. I have seen you use that card numerous times.

This is what you posted last year.
What changed.

If it wasn't for all of the side show BS then this site would be boring and I guarantee it wouldn't get many hits in a day. I don't think folks are trying to pad their post count, rather this is an informal gathering place for local folks. I think the idea of a club transcends the actual subject that the club encompasses. This is an extension of the once a month meeting...I don't think anyone's intent is to annoy or disrupt the flow of information on this board. They are simply using it as a forum to get to know other folks. I'm afraid that if that were policed then there would be far less posts, and the discourse would grow dry.

I don't post much of the extra curricular, but I enjoy pulling up the forum and watching Brian make a fool out of himself:)

Oh yeah BTW...What good is life if you're not wasting your time. Do we live to be serious and die? Hey if it keeps the kids off the streets and off the crack then its a good thing...right?????

Thatââ"šÂ¬Ã¢"žÂ¢s what you posted so I am curious to what has changed. Have we just ****** in each other cheerios and have become over sensitive to each others comments.

Brian

I didn't see anything wrong with this thread. I can think of many threads going around in this forum that aren't reef related.

Ohhhh Brian,
Good thing you 2 didn't post those in the last 5 minutes of the game! You would have to sit the next one out. JK!
Overall, I like most of the rule changes. I know that goalies will be moaning about the smaller pads and it will put into question some GAA's for a year or two. They will get over it.
I will believe the zero tolerance for clutching and grabbing when we hit game 53 and they still have zero tolerance for clutching and grabbing.
I love no touch icing and hope they waive it off when appropriate but I can see the disputes already as to "how close does another player have to be in the area of the missed pass that is waived off".
By instituting so many rule changes, they immediately will get back some "lost" customers just because everyone will want to see what the "new" game looks like.
If the choice comes down to Forsberg or Foote.... I pick Foote. Forsberg is too inconsistant and too often hurt. (The health of his hand is an issue, too) and I LOVE Adam Foote. That guy defines Hockey Courage.

I love that Patrick Roy is one of the big proponents for goalies having smaller pads. Not that I think HE has an agenda, but what a way to try to preserve your records....

I'm with you, Patty. I'm flabbergasted that Foote has never been to an All-Star game. But, he's a defensive defenseman and they don't give fancy trophies for that. I believe his salary is quite a bit smaller than Blake's though, so I would think he'd be safer.

I disagree. With the rule changes, there will be more offense. If they really cut down on the grabbing, Forsberg will be even better. Keep in mind, alot of Forsberg's injuries are a result of cheapshots. If the rules really change, his injuries won't be a factor anymore. I love Adam Foote as well, but the game is about offense now. I would go with Forsberg. Maybe they can keep both.:)

You nailed it Patty, we heard all that crap before a couple of years ago. I hope with the larger free skating area and the two line pass, that will make it harder to clutch and grab, cause I don't believe the refs will stop it. They always say it's a big deal in the offseason but they never do anything about it for a full season. This current style of play has cut off at least 5 years of Forsbergs career IMO.

And the thought of 21 playing for another, well, that just sucks big time.
