I was having much trouble with cyano and have been making some major changes and upgrades to my display and sump. I always thought I had adequate circulation in my tank until recently I saw a reef tank that had very high flow. I purchased 2 Seio Super Flow 1500gph stream powerheads and after doing a major cleanup of my tank and removing some rock I started up the pumps.
Nothing short of amazing. The water which was rather cloudy from the cleaning cleared up in an hour! I was concerned about how my tangs would handle the higher flow but they love it. They swim right through the current without any problem. There are adequate areas where the flow is minimal so they can chill out when needed. The way the water is moving over my rock I have no doubt that my cyano problems are over. (My tank runs 0-1 nitrate and 0 phosphate and I was still having problems with cyano!)
It took 7 years but I think I finally have my tank spot on. My advice: get a stream type pump and get rid of the smaller powerheads if your tank is 75 gallons or more. I plan on putting the powerheads on timer to start when my lights come on and shut down when my lights turn off.
