new (used) 9015 set up break in

dmorel

Can I borrow your towel
I just picked up a used 9015 from a local.
he was using the foam extractor and had the blue air valve completely removed.
My sump config doesn't allow me to use the foam extractor until I get some additional output hose, so I just used the collection cup.

I've had it running for several hours with the blue air valve screw completely removed, while I see lots of bubbling, nothing is coming up the neck of the collection cup at all.

I *presume* I need to let this run for a day or two before I become concerned, but I do have a question about the air valve screw.
the instructions say that this should be left all the way open during break in, but does that mean completely removed or just one turn in?

Hopefully I will see some awesome production in the next few days, and if anyone knows about the air valve screw, please LMK!
thanks,

The air screw is not very relevant, the skimmer should start to build foam if it is at least open 6 turns. How do you have it set up? In tank use or in sump use with the stand pipe?

In sump, everything seems to be running right. I just didn't know what to do with that air screw so thanks for clearing that up.
If the air screw is not going to hinder performance I would love to keep it in, even if it's just a single turn since it makes the skimmer pretty much silent and the tank is in my BR.
I had some thick foam in the column this morning, but nothing in the collection cup yet. I'm presuming by the time I get home from work I will be seeing something.
thanks!

Oh I don't think that's going to be a problem based on the very dry foam I saw in the column this morning, but absolutely I will let you know if there are any issues.

Very much appreciate your info on the air screw too, that will make it more pleasant at bedtime.

Thanks for all your help in this forum, I read countless threads you replied to when setting everything up so I knew just what to look for to make sure everything was good.

Roger...
Been a while now. I'm getting very dry foam, one might say too dry.
The pic below shows the skimmate production after 4 days since my last cleaning.

When I do clean it, the gunk in the neck is seriously nasty, but I think I would like to be pulling out just a tiny bit more-- there is nothing in the actual collection cup.

Any advice?
thanks!

Hi Roger:

I've just emailed you about the exact same thing. I'm having the exact same problems. Dry skimmate that never reaches into the cup, nasty stuff in the neck after a week. Please help! Hope I not hijacking, DM.

Not at all.
FWIW, I put in the new part and also switched to using the foam extractor that I have. It's helping. Still not getting more than a 1/4 a day of skimmate, but at least I'm getting something now!

Good luck with your FishGuy, I'm sure Roger will help out. One thing we know for sure is the customer service here is unreal.

Best customer service around....I know we'll figure it out. Is your skimmer right AT the blue line? Mine is like a 1/4 inch off. Don't think that's the problem.

dmorel,

A 1/4" a day or a 1/4 of a skimmer cup? Realistically I would expect that 100ml a day is about right for a 9015 on most tanks. On my 9010 I got about 200-250ml a week on a 120 that was moderately stocked.

I put the foam extractor online as well as the part you sent me Sunday morning. Started making real foam again about 1:00 PM on Sunday (PST) so it's been almost exactly 48 hours. I just measured everything I have in the collection vessel using a measuring cup SO DON'T TELL MY WIFE and it's almost exactly 1/4 cup total. so that's about 60ml in two days (thank you google calculator)...

I wish I could say it's because my tank doesn't have that much to pull out but from the algae I'm seeing and the daily feeding, I would have to disagree.

thanks for any thoughts you have.

What part...

What part...

Roger,
could you post what part you shipped that you thought might help? I'm having the same problem on my 9015.

It won't help in Norway, in the US two size impellers have been used but they are both smaller than the 50Hz impeller. I sent an impeller. There is a larger one that makes the 60Hz version slightly stronger than the 50Hz version but it can have trouble starting if the voltage is below 115V, so we changed to a slightly smaller one. My guess is something is wrong with your venturi nozzle. If anything I would try a new 3130.16.

I find that if I want to wet skim, the 9010 collection cup is the best. I originally bought the 9010, then found someone selling the 9015 cup so I bought that as well.

I have to say that the 9015 will get dark skimmate but no where close to what the 9010 will pull out. It almost seems like the 9015 is better off on large systems, whereas on my 92 corner, its actually at a disadvantage with the 9015 cup in.

that's interesting, mine is a pretty small tank too... total water volume about 80 gallons. I have the foam extractor on, which is helping, albeit on a bit.

One other note... I have found there is now a bit more noise to the skimmer, which was previously silent except for the air intake. It's a faint clicking sound.

I'm out of town all of next week so I'm going to stop making adjustments for a little while...

I missed the last post....Is the impeller something that I could purchase? If so, how can I verify i do not have the better impeller first?
