i wouldn't add clams if the lights your talking about are for the tank in your sig. i am thinking of converting my 90 gallon which is 24 inches deep and i have been told that 2 400 watt metal halides would be sufficient. what are the dimensions of your tank you are talking about the lighting for? you can pick up a decent ballast for mh with sokets and reflectors on ebay. i think 2 400 watt mh was something like 195.00 + shipping.
okay, here are the dementions of the tank,
72" x 24" x24"
now, like I said before I have 4x140 watt VHO's and 4x 65watt PC's which equals 820 watts on 180 gallon tank.
IMO clams need intense light. There may be 4.5 watts per gallon but that says nothing for the intensity. People have kept clams under VHO's and PC's but I think the clam's growth was compromised because of it.
If you do decide to go with a clam I would only get a squamosa or derasa as these are the least demanding as far as light is concerned.
So... what you guys are saying is you HAVE to have a MH set up to have healthy clams? I can't afford the energy bill, so I'm going with 6-8 96w PC... hows that over a standard 75 gal?

I just used the tank electrical calculator here, and the difference in cost between using 2 250W and 2 400W is only $6 a month for me ($0.08 per kilowatt).
EEP! I knew this was goin g to be expensive, man I just checked out some MH systems... I already spent 1k on the tank (no live stock or rock) and the lights alone are gonna cost me close to another 1k....
Yeah man, reef tanks are not cheap. Ive proably spent close to 10k on my tank alone. I dont know if im ready for the jump to MH though. On the other hand, I have been sucsessful in keeping a porites coral though and Im running 4x140 watt VHOs and 4x 65watt PCs.
