It might be worth it to install a good prefilter -- any undersink drinking water filter will work much better than the little prefilter cartridges on the RO unit. It's more expensive to maintain than RO membranes, but less expensive than DI resin. (And your RO membranes will last longer.)

Get the water report for both locations and compare notes. At least you'll know what you are dealing with.

Nicole... I started this instead of keeping that thread OT.

Not sure what you mean by the prefilter. I have two RO units hooked together. The feed line is split and each goes through a 1 micron sediment and .5 micron carbon, then through the RO and each goes through it's own DI. The lines then merge and both go through one more DI cartridge and into the 200G storage container. I usually make 175-200 gallons at a shot and not small quantities since it takes a few gallons to get high quality product.

I suspect silicates are high but the test kit for it always leave me guessing. I spoke to the water department for the city and was told silicates are not something they monitor. At my house which is a different water company I get pretty much any info I need since I'm friends with the second in command.

It will be a little easier to change the DI resin with the cost being about $7.00 per 10" cartridge instead of the store bought ones at $28.

Well, I have a KDF drinking water filter on all my taps. I use this water for cooking, brushing teeth, water line for the icemaker, etc -- basically the cold water is all filtered. In effect, this is a "prefilter." (There are many drinking water filters.)

RO units come with a prefilter cartridge -- it's the first stage. If your water is bad, these wear out in a hurry and then your membrane has to work harder.

Now, the KDF filters in my case are more expensive than the prefilters on my RO unit, but they last much, much longer. And my tap water is BAD -- my unfiltered TDS is over 800. Without my prefilter, I'd be replacing my membrane every few months.

Please forgive me i dont want to hijack this thread; but Nicole where are you getting your filters I have an AWI typhoon III and i want to find a vendor that has the best prices..

thanks

gabriel

Sorry, I rarely buy from the lowest bidder.

These guys have had my business for all my water filtration needs for many years because of their knowledge, excellent service and friendly nature.

ro membranes suffer mostly from chlorine exposure. It's important to protect the membranes with good carbon prefilters and a sediment doesn't hurt. Locally reefgeek has good pricing on good quality replacement filters.

It's in your best interest to order the same replacent filters from AWI. Without going into too much detail, the filters for the Typhoon are progressively matched for efficient filtration and the best possible performance. Actually, nearly half the cost of your set of four replacement filters is for the DI replenishment (plug-n-play cartridge, not just the resin)
Regardless what some people say about Walter, he uses top-notch materials...that's a fact. Yes, there are numerous vendors on eBay selling replacement filters that are cheaper. You may find them for say about 25% cheaper, but you are quite likely to be getting something around 50% less quality...see what I'm trying to say? If you think this is a good deal then by all means.....
I use my RO/DI for drinking water as well, so I chose to not be frugal in that department for a variety of reasons, but that's just me.
As Nicole mentioned: She rarely buys from the lowest bidder....there's a logical reason behind that.

Here is a thread I created awhile back that may shed some light for you:

Good luck ;)

Am just about to add a KDF-based filter system to my home. Have you been using this water through your RO, and any ill effects on your inverts? The system we have planned is KDF -> carbon -> softener -> tap (or RO, and the RO unit I'm planning on also has KDf at the beginning, and a ceramic filter after the membrane)

Thanks,
Dave

Oh no you didn't!!!!

This thread is a year old. Try opening a new thread or pming her since she no longer lives in So Cal.

Good Luck

Don't have to wait. That's just a choice some make for themselves.

If you'd "contribute" 1/10000000th of the price of your return pump, you'd be able to search at any time too!!!!! ;)

You should not use a softener on the water that will eventually go to your tank. It uses rock salt which you will eventually have to ro/di out of the water again

BTW- the rest of you are post whores:rollface:

Will use potassium salt instead of sodium salt for the softener, but we really need it for the house. We have really bad, bad water. Cooking, showering, plants, car washes, everything...
