It might be worth it to install a good prefilter -- any undersink drinking water filter will work much better than the little prefilter cartridges on the RO unit. It's more expensive to maintain than RO membranes, but less expensive than DI resin. (And your RO membranes will last longer.)
Get the water report for both locations and compare notes. At least you'll know what you are dealing with.
Nicole... I started this instead of keeping that thread OT.
Not sure what you mean by the prefilter. I have two RO units hooked together. The feed line is split and each goes through a 1 micron sediment and .5 micron carbon, then through the RO and each goes through it's own DI. The lines then merge and both go through one more DI cartridge and into the 200G storage container. I usually make 175-200 gallons at a shot and not small quantities since it takes a few gallons to get high quality product.
I suspect silicates are high but the test kit for it always leave me guessing. I spoke to the water department for the city and was told silicates are not something they monitor. At my house which is a different water company I get pretty much any info I need since I'm friends with the second in command.
It will be a little easier to change the DI resin with the cost being about $7.00 per 10" cartridge instead of the store bought ones at $28.
