Nikon D50 lens

I have the 18-70 and think it's great. The lenses you have listed below are very introductory, with the exception of the 50mm. It's also the only non-zoom you have listed so...

Take a look at the Nikon 28-105mm lens. That might be a better "all around" lens for what you are mentioning you want to do with it.

Don't bother with the 18-55mm....the 18-70mm is a much better build. The 50mm f/1.8 is a really nice lens and cheap too (around $100 depending on where you buy).

The 70-300 is a very nice lens. Great for all around outdoor stuff especially wildlife but not really great for landscapes and definitely not for tank shots. Aside from that, you should really be looking to the 70-300mm VR (vibration reduction) model that was released several months ago. It's a very nice lens for the price. Only possibly concern would be a balance issue with the D50 but it should not be too bad.

I just bought the Nikon 28-105 for my N80 (yes, I still shoot film!), but it would be a nice lens for the D50 as well (42-157mm). It is in the $150 range for a good condition used lens. It has a usable macro mode as well, so you can get good pics of the tank inhabitants. The 50mm is the lens you want if you want to learn to be a better photographer. A prime lens forces you think more about composition. Not that you can't do it with a zoom, but the normal focal length prime will cause you to relate to your subject in a more natural way. Just my opinion.

Man it is a hard choice between the 50mm and the 28-105.
I think I will go with the 50mm so I can get better @ photography first then get another lens.
thanks for the lens.

i have a used 28-105 Nikon w/ original box in excellent cond as well as a 50 f/1.8 w/ no box, also in excellent cond. I am in Cal but i can ship to you. email me me if you're interested as i will be posting locally in craigslist soon.

I got mine on ebay. You might also check your local camera stores to see if they have any 'open box' or display models that they are willing to sell for a discount. These would still have the full factory warantee. Good luck.

hyacinth, how did you like the lens? Why are you selling it?

j-
it's a very versatile lens, esp with the macro capability. i have way too many lenses. i just got a 18-200vr as part of a package deal so i need to get rid of a few others.

*drool* 18-200mm VR lens....ooooohhhhhhh......I would love to pick one of those up for a "one lens walk-around" kit.

Gaaaaahhhhh. 18-200mm VR lens.

hahahaha

I am tired of looking for a lens for my D50. It has been sitting on my table for over 3 weeks because I ca't find a good lens at a price that I can afford. Is the 28-80mm a good lens at all?
I have read some good reviews on it. Does anybody here use it on their Nikon?
thanks

D50, 50mm lens, lousy photographer behind the camera ;) Mine was a little over $100, but is hard to beat. It kicks butt in comparison to the 28-80mm stock lens in my opinion.

How did you get that close to your wrase?!?!?!?
I tried getting that close to my fish when I borrowed my cousins 50mm and it was all blurry.
BTW what do you mean "lousy"? Those pics are great.

I have the D40 with the 18-55mm lense and it actually takes great photos for a kit lense. Here are some of my macros....
