Oceanic megaflow

Hi,
I'm not really sure if I should be posting this here or in the general forum, but I've gotten so much great DIY info on getting my tank running, this seemed like the place. So here goes:

1: Oceanic 58RR w/ megaflow, running 1 day, converted from a 10yr old 30 sumpless. The megaflow isn't great at surface skimming 'cause of the intakes at the bottom and middle. At the top though, the teeth are only on the front, which creates dead spots on both sides. Can/should I drill holes on each side just below the water line for improved drainage there, and will holes work as well as slots?

2: In this kit, the return elbow (the one that connects to the loc-line) has a hole drilled in for siphon break. It's an inch above the waterline in the overflow, so there's a noisy stream of water shooting out. Is there an easy way to seal that off now that the tank is running? If so, is it ok to drill anti siphon holes in loc-line?

3: Return pump is a Mag 7. The vibration noise is unbelievable, even w/ a mouse pad underneath it. Plumbing is roughly 2 feet of rigid PVC and 1 1/2 ft of flexible. Any fixes? Also, the flow isn't as much as I had hoped for. The head loss calc said 358 gph, but it doesn't even feel like that. If I switched to a Mag 9, would there just be that much more vibration noise? Any different pump suggestions? (I'm of the "high flow through sump" school of thought)

4: The overflow's pretty quiet, the sump entry point is quiet, but the water rushing through the 1 1/2 flexible Oceanic hose is very loud. Is there any way to deal with that?

I think that's it for now. Thanks for any help.

1 - One megaoverflow should give you nearly 600 GPH if your return pump is powerful enough. That should be far more than enough through a sump on a 58. I have a 125 with 80 Gal sump, & I run with pretty much just one overflow ( and a CL ).

2 - there should be a knockout in the side(s) of the megaflow. You should have cut the knockout out & trimmed the return line vertical PVC to fit down into that slot. That puts the siphon break at or below water line.

3 - I have numerous Mag Pumps ( even one external on a CL ), and they have all been very quiet. I would suggest you open yours up & check the impeller to make sure nothings broken, or that theres nothing knocking it out of balance.

4 - ??

Stugray,

Thanks for the reply--

1: One overflow is certainly enough for this tank, and, at this head, the Mag 7 will never outpump it. But the overflow's in the middle, no teeth on the sides, and I'm seeing stagnant surface water there. Hence, the hole drilling question....

2: I did remove the knockout, and the locline exits directly through it, but they drilled the siphon break right in the "armpit" of the 90, which is about an inch above the waterline.

3: I did open up the Mag, because it was making a horrible machine gun sound. Everything seemed ok so I put it back together, the rattle was gone, but the vibration is still very loud, even with the mousepad. Maybe I'm just expecting too much--some people talk about their pumps being silent....

4: What I meant was that the drain line makes noise. Not the overflow or durso ripoff, not the point where the line enters the sump (although after 24 hours, that's developed an annoying gurgle), but the line itself. You can hear the water whooshing through it. Maybe that's normal for this type of tubing--it's the really flexible stuff from Oceanic that you can tie in knots (looks like swimming pool tubing)

Thanks again,

Grant
