Oceanrunner needlewheel vs Sedra needlewheel

Wouldn't you want to drill it right in front of the gate valve. You can drill yours behind the gate valve and I'll drill mine in front... I'll call mine the "Big Daddy John's actually working venturi" :)

Peace,
John H.

John, you are making sense to me. I understand that venturis should be different for each pump/application. They are to be fine tuned devices. Even the best "home made" venturi is probably not going to be the best it can be. I could send you venturi's I've made that work great on my pumps, and they could be complete crap on yours.

I think what Don was trying to get at in his original post is you cant just take a sedra venturi and plop in on any pump and expect it to perform well. Now that I look back to my original reply, I feel that was a completely brainless reply. I didn't even think about the blanket statement I was making.

once again. Sedra venturis work as they should on a sedra pump.

hahaha... I know in the ER it's in the middle, but the mazzies are after... so are the venturi's top fathom make...

there is a diagram there.

I think it does have to be after... after all it's the pressure differential that pulls in the air...

So I'll drill mine behind the gate... you drill your in front and we'll name it "Big Daddy John's kick bottom water squirter" ;) J/K

Either way, it's an experiment that might be worth trying.

Perhaps I will...I'm going to be building a new skimmer soon, so when I get the new pumps I'll play around with the idea. I don't have any extra pumps kicking around right now though. I'll need to get an air meter to see how effective it really is.

My theory is simple. Have a venturi designed well enough to stall the pump because you can always valve it back. Ever tried to make a stock venturi pull more are? Tough to redrill that tiny little tube.

Make sense
Don

Don,

I get what you're saying. I just don't think that under the circumstances and given the limitations of the needlewheel impeller, that you need it. Stalling the pump could be not just due to the fact that you are pulling in too much air, but due to the fact that you are putting too much constriction on the outlet.

John H.

They are metric my friend! So you will have to do some modifications to get pipe in and out of the pump... although I've actually found that 3/4" nylon hose is a very snug fit on the output.

Peace,
John H.

well, you could use flexible Lee's vinyl tubing on the output... 3/4" inch tubing actually fits perfectly and sits snugly, but I would only use it in the sump and would not setup a recirculating circuit w/ it, unless you wanted to glue in the hose.

Peace,
John H.

Well I recently got the Gen-x 2400 that has a needlewheel in it. That pump does come with a venturi but it wont work for a deltec style skimmer because it sucks air from the end rather than the side of the pipe. This therefore restricst you from attaching a hose to the intake.

I decided to use DonW's technique and make my own venturi. Well what I found out is Don's idea was way way way too much air intake. As was mentioned before the restrition also slowed down the pump too much. I found that even with NO restriction and simply drilling a hole in a piece of PVC and making the air hose flush with the inside wall of the pipe, it STILL sucks too much air. It no longer will cavitate like before, but the bubbles get so big they arent even effective anymore. So I had to tone that down even. I really think all the talk about venturi performance is a NON ISSUE. It is not hard to get enough air and is infact harder to tone it down to the right level.

The eheim 1260s that I've seen were on a deltec AP702 and they seemed to put a really nice amount of tiny bubbles. Two were enough to fill up around a 10" diameter tube w/ ease. The skimmate looked real solid too. Subjectively I couldn't really tell the difference b/w the bubbles produced by a sedra 9000 or OR 3700 on a ER CS8-2.

Peace,
John H.

Needlewheelled 1260 sure produces one of the nastiest skimmate... But i not too sure but i doubt u can get one unless u have bought the skimmer...
