Ok...I really have a mantis now..... :)

Here he is....and he was only $5 CAD. :) He's about 1.5 inches long with a dark emerald green body. Can anyone tell from the pic what species he is? He's ultra cool. Eventhough I gave him a tube to stay in..he's decided to do a bit of excavating and has dug a new burrow. He's taken to a piece of live rock that he's decided to do a bit of renovating ( I can hear him smashing inside of one of the holes ). And he's been exploring and roaming around his tank. I only got him yesterday and he's doing all this..he must be feeling right at home :)

You really lucked out. This is Gonodactylus smithii, one of my favorite stomatopods to keep in an aquarium. They are tough, threaten a lot, and you should be able to keep it for another 2 or 3 years. Maximum size is around 3 inches. They are generally found on reef flats from Guam to the eastern Indian Ocean. Enjoy.

I also have a G. Smithii and I love him to bits. His name is max and he is an exciting guy to watch. I wish you much luck with your new mantis. :D

That looks exactly like the one I just got tonight- Mine is just under 3"! That thing is a bruiser! It sees me looking in the siade of the tank and bows up on me like it's gonna kick my @ZZ!

Many people don't realize that the "smasher" varieties of mantis shrimp do very well in community tanks with fish as long as you make sure to drop food where the shrimp resides and keep it well fed.
Don't ever put a small cab in there (like an emerald crab) unless you want to see exactly what those claws are designed to do in the way Mother nature intended (a crayfish often elicits the same response)
