oldcastle silica sand

bump^^^^anyone?I put this sand in my sump and it does have alot of sharp edges, not round at all.I agree i wouldnt use this partricular sand with sand sifters. As for your questoin reefkeepa I had regular play sand for about a year and a half in a fowlr tank but this is my first reef.I never chcked calcium or silicates in that tank so i dont know if it affected it or not.

I think there is a reefer named PaulB who's had a tank up since the 70's using only silica sand. And he puts bricks and stuff in his tank. He's had a lot of success with things that people think can't be done. Maybe search him out?

OK don't drag me into this one.
Although my reef is very old, I do not use silica sand, not that I think there is anything wrong with it, I just don't use it. I use dolomite. As for buffering, I doubt any type of sand buffers anything at the pH of our tanks. As for bricks, I don't really put them in my tank. I said you can use them in a tank or a sump for a very cheap alternative to base rock for denitrification purposes.
I use them in breeder tanks.
Of course, I do put other "stuff" in my tank.
Have fun

Sorry Paul, I guess your tank has reached legendary/(Urban legend?) status. Sort of like "You can't be William Wallace, William Wallace is 8 feet tall and eats children" ... ;)

(Exchange 'Bill Brasky" instead of "William Wallace" if you like!)

Paul,
I had a 30gallon Chrome side tank that would shock the living hell out of me when I was about 10 yrs old. It was a classic FW
fish tank complete with Tiger barbs swordtails and red tail sharks!
My pops had it set up on a wrought iron frame on a terrazzo floor!
I'm lucky it didn't kill me but it gave me respect for electricity!

Reefkeepa, I also had a few of those chrome tanks and the black painted ones that they had before that. I had tanks in the fiftees and those small black ones with the asphalt sealer was all that was available. Until silicone was invented you could not get a large tank. I used to breed tilippa, bettas, anglefish and a few that I forgot. Of course everytime I went to the beach I would bring home crabs, eels, pipefish, seahorses, whatever.
Take care.
Paul

Yea it had an asphalt seal too ! FLASHBACK!!!!
I remember that when it started leaking in the mid 70's my pops resealed it with silicone. I can remember him complaining about it being a PITA! When I told him it was shocking me he said "DON"T TOUCH IT".
P.S. Thanks for your Nam service.
I was just a kid but had much respect for the military, I contribute annually to VVA.
