Well 8 days ago the gsm laid the "mother of all clownfish nests" for me. I have personaly never seen one like this, it measured an easy 5" X 2-1/2 to 3". OK maybe some of you guys are saying "been there, done that" but for me it was a first. Tonight it hatched, I am in shock :eek: My rotifer cultures are not this dense, it is head to tail larvae in there :eek1: I am NOT kidding, I once had 1200 reidi fry in a 2-1/2 gallon fishbowl. At 6-8mm ea. they were not nearly as dense as these clownfish larvae are in 5 gallons. I will probably not sleep well tonight, PMD has been a huge problem for me and I can't wait to see what I have in the morning.
 
Shoot, Dave, I dumped out like 5 gallons of dense culture tonight not to mention what I siphoned out of the larval tank. If you need rots, let me know; it's either feast or famine around here and I have way more than I need.

Woke up this morning thinking it was all a dream. Checked the tank, it was real :) Minor die off overnight, there are 18 gazillion little fishes in there. No clue how I'm gonna siphon out the dead ones.

Nicole, thanks but I have plenty for now. Since I can't seem to get the rot density very high I keep starting new cultures so I always have 15-25 gallons on hand.

Oh David that is so kewel!

Hope everything works out , cook them rots, if you make the siphon with the rigid air line, heat the tip and squeeze it with pliers to make it smaller that will keep from sucking the live larvae.

Large, it is C-quest...
 
Not being a butt, LOL but my mission in life is to get his story around. He was a good teacher/boss. Even my hatchery it's named after him Addy-Zone.

ediaz: I agree with you. Very nice guy with lots of info and he truly put a lot of money and effort into the marine fish hatchery. Just curious, since you are so close, what fish do you breed?
 
everything that has been bred,comercially, some in process, some just getting broodstock, some in planning, I have been set since May '05.

Yea I know about the rigid airline, didn't get this far without it ;) I supercharge it, use increasing sizes of tubing to get it attached to a 1/2" hose. Like a reverse fire hose, works well.

They still look great, lost a few today but nothing to get upset about. Cleaned the tank tonight but didn't need to add any rots, that worries me a little. Hopefully they are living off yolk and not really eating yet. I'm asuming that it will be a challenge to keep enough food in there once they really start chowing down. The more I look at it I'm pretty sure there close to 1000 if not more.

Lisa, no wolf eels yet but they are on my "list" :)
 
Ok it's the third day, they are eating like pigs now and there has been very minimal die off. The "shock" is giving way to concern, now I'm feeling a little intimidated. I have been doing clowns for less than a year and the largest batch of survivors so far was about 85. I have managed to raise a few hundered to market but I got them started 30-40 at a time. I did some rough counting this morning, mostly looking at 2" areas and extrapolating. There are more than 1000 in there, WAY more than 1000. Maybe 1500+. That is a bit of a jump from 85 :rolleyes: What do I do ??? Do I even try to keep them all or should I just pick out a few hundred and work with that (baby steps lol) ?? How much tank space is needed to raise 1000+ clowns? Filtration? What do I do about bbs, hatch an ounce of cysts per day in ten gallon tanks? Having a bit of a panic attack this morning :eek:

welcome to the real world of fish breeding, still wanna guess why I kept rotifers in high densities or artemia in a 50g rubbermade tub now :bounce1: keep taking it slow, the next step is to get them grown enough to take NHBS then you have to worry about how to get that much, your going to want lots of filtration going on a moderate sized tank for eventual growout space, consider spliting them into 2 tanks maroon's can be umm kinda agressive :D :D either get used to some loss or setup a smaller tank for those that are getting torn up badly. and take your time, the next batch is not that far away :D :D
 
Actually the gsm's I have grown out are not nearly as bad as wsm's I tried, those little buggers actually KILL each other. Funny you should post rsman, remember when you first saw the PetCo tank and muttered "you could grow out a thousand clowns in there" :D Guess what :rolleyes:

Ok it's getting rediculous now, I obviously have no clue how to estimate clownfish larvae numbers. In my defense I am really good at seahorses :) A few hours after trying the Zeigler diet the bottom of the tank looked like a shag carpet. I decided to siphon it clean with NO regard for larvae. They are plastered to all four sides, the bottom, and all through the water colum and surface. I siphoned the bottom very quickly with a 1/2" hose. It made no difference whatsoever to the "look" of the density in the tank, maybe 5% or less. I actually counted the larvae I sucked out, there were 500 in the bowl. I took about 8 ounces of water out of the 4-1/2 gallons packed to the brim and sucked up FIVE HUNDRED larvae. You couldn't even see any difference in the tank. So now I have absolutely no clue how many there are but the 2000 idea is absurd.

hehehehehe U know you are going to save ALL of them and grow them all out in that petco tank :D :D

Ill stand by my statement you can grow out thousands of clowns in that tank ( with proper filtration ) its a shallow tank, so O2 exchange will be good. and its HUGE :D time to DIY a BIG bio wheel :D
