open brain coral from japan

I don't know if this brain is from Japan, but sure looks nice.

Adam (Cquarium) gets crazy LPS.

I was under the impresion that "japanese brain" was a color morph and not a geographical situation. This obviously has nothing to do with CITES which is a horrible horrible treaty that does as much to hurt wildlife as help it. The japanese brain is so named because the collectors of the corals know they will be paid 10x for a multi brain to japanese buyers than american.

All of these "open brains" look like Wellsophyllia from here.
I'm not really seeing anything rare or unusual... it used to be quite common to see rainbow wellsos offered for sale.
Perhaps the fact that they aren't being captive propped is driving up their price tag.

One word of caution: Angelfish love to pick at "open brains".

They used to be called Wellsophyllia radiata the name was changed to Trachphyllia radiata some 5-8 years ago.

Actually, the current valid name for all such corals is Trachyphyllia geoffroyi

I think you'll agree- this is much better than simply calling them "open brain corals from Japan". :)

Pretty sure radiata is also valid. There are definitely 2 distinct physical morphs of trachyphyllia.

The Caribbean Rose Coral mentioned a page or so back looks allot like a small radiata. Not as colorful though. I have a small mint green one. Cute little brain for sure. Would be killer in a nano since they stay small, and dont puff up as much as trachyphyllia. Mine is about 2 1/2" across.

I don't understand why more people don't collect Trachyphyllia sp. So many awesome colors why would u need any other corals :D

At MACNA, Anthony Calfo fragged a thrachy with a tile cutting saw and glued it to a rock with cut side against rock.

Any owrd on how it faired after MACNA?

My memory as well. Not the only coral that used to be seen on + off at the LFS but are not very common now.

Quite a few LPS are like that, perhaps overcollected?

[haven't seen that many branching bubbles, blue/exotic bubbles, or anywhere near the volume of open brains [among others] now as was 5 years ago ...]

IMO, `Japanese' either suggest that they are violating US F&W/Cities to bring them in ... or it's pure marketing hype. Neither of those I like to give a dollar to ... despite how cool.
