I have a 72 gal bow with wet/dry Trickle, I want to build a DIY refugium using a 20 gal tall.
Here's were Im currently at with my mockup.
I have 2 versions, one uses egg crates as a table to hold carbon and Filter.Does anyone see any issues with these?
I also attached a pic of my current sump.
I have an HOB skimmer because of I have no room for it down below.

I am looking to convert my bioball wet dry system so am following. Can you tell me, what keeps the water level where you have it sketched?

I say ditch the 3" sand bed and go with either no sand, shallow sand, or deep sand (6"+). I see no benefit of 3" of sand, you'll still get all the detritus trapping of a DSB with none of the denitrification.

Other than that it looks good.

+1 and if you want a section for carbon or filter media put it on opposite side before your return pump. Make it wider than an inch so you can fit bags of media in there.
