OT: any freedivers (or scuba) in the LA/OC area?

anyone else scuba or preferably freedive in the area? having just moved out here from philly a few months ago, all of my dive buddies are now a little bit far away, and unfortunately I sold all my scuba gear before moving (what the heck was I thinking...)

I still have my freedive gear and wetsuit though, and a speargun around here somewhere, I've been shore diving a couple of nice spots in the area, but am apprehensive to do any serious diving or spearfishing without a buddy, at least until I get to know the area better. with lobster season nearly around the corner, it'd be nice to get to know some divers in the area, I'm sure I'm not the only one with the diving bug around here ;)

wow, sounds like me! i moved from philly, to LA not too long ago. but all my stuff is in the Philippines go figure...

Me and my buddy (raskall311) usually go lobster shore diving the first weekend of the season. After that the commercial fisherman gets them all.

yeah, we do real well first week or two. Also sports chelet has great rentals equipment if you want to scuba.

I have never dived localy, but am up to joining your. Sharkdude knows the area a fair bit. Sounds like their are several good spots in Laguna. I will find the link he sent me.

I'd love to hop along on one of these weekend dives if you guys don't mind, do the commercial fisheries really wipe out the remaining lobsters that quickly? it's a shame if they do, it's such a long season that a couple of good weekends followed by a bunch of mediocre ones is such a tease...

Did you try spearboard.com? Here is the Link for the SoCal board.

I'm a lurker there, but haven't been there in a while, thanks for the link :)

raskal311 thanks much for the sports chalet info, there's just something I never liked about renting gear though, never really fits right, and at a few meters down I always start wondering how well they service it, I think I'm going to hold off until I can get a good set, that way I know it's serviced all the time...

Richard thanks for the link, I actually have shorediving.com bookmarked, although I've yet to make it to anywhere on there, the pics they have look phenomenal, and gotta love the gps info on each spot :D

laverda I'd love to see that link, and anytime you're bored and up for a local dive feel free to let me know, I know I've got your contact info from the FR Experiment around here somewhere, but I have no idea where

im down to join in... PM me with your info... i have been looking for dive partners for some spear fishing in the area but wasnt sure if anyone on this board was interested...

Laguna sea sports is a good site to go on to see current conditions. They update it regularly throughout the day.

Also, sportchalet has pretty good equipment for rent. Pretty new and well serviced. Never had a bad experience with them.

I'm unable to go as much as I used to or would like to, but I'm down for some freediving. Hunting or bug collecting, or just sight seeing buddy backup.

got my best calico at Catalina last October
