OT: any freedivers (or scuba) in the LA/OC area?

used to be into it a lot more in my single days, but now its maybe a couple a couple of times a year.

I only have an AB Biller 42 now that works ok for me for a variety.
Semi pro guys have nice custom rigs that can nail a white seabass at 30+ feet out.

Laguna is fairly fished out, but there are some still good spots here and there. Much less kelp cover in Laguna.

Reef Point at Crystal Cove state beach is cool. I always see big animals there. I've seen leopard sharks, big sting rays and bat rays, horn sharks, sheepshead, lobster, calicos, harbor seals, etc there. Its south facing so southern storms make it a good surf spot, but once you get outside the surf zone its not too bad. There is a sand falts/eel grass area at about 20 feet deep and then you get to some submerged pinnacles/exposed roks at low tide. On the backside of these it drops off to 60+ feet.

There are several good spots in Palos Verdes. The parking is tough, and some of the hikes down the hill are hard (especially on return after diving), but its worthwhile. Either in and underneath the kelp canopy, or just on the edges and looking out into bluewater is usually good. Often Palos Verdes is in lee of wave shadow of Catalina, so more often divable.

SuperNoob: you can, but you'll still need a weight belt and you might get chilled depending on depth, duration, etc.

I'll guess your surf suit is 2-3mm?
Depending upon your muscle/fat %, I'd estimate 10-12 lbs or so for a 200 lb guy. You want to weight yourself so at the surface your head is above water, and if you go down 10 feet or so, you float back to the surface.(This is for freediving, and a scuba BC lets you adust bouyancy with air).
weight is more for basic scuba wetsuit at 6.5mm and maybe doubled up at the chest.

night dive

night dive

I would not go diving for bugs the first weekend especially opening night it will be an absolute zoo with the power boaters out there but I would be up for getting a night dive going I do not dive for bugs since i got my kayak but I can be the group photographer :D I am going to be on vacation this week and might be able to do a little freediving if my schedule and the weather/surf permit.

yeah, I've read that it's a little insane that first weekend, but hey, keeps things entertaining. plus if I know that there's lobsters sitting out there waiting to be grabbed, I'll be there either way, doubt I'll be able to help it :D

sending a pm with my info, hopefully there's some nice weather this coming week
