OT anyone have the iphone?

my dorky IT friend guy who LOVES anything apple, said hes going to wait a long time before he gets one due to it only being available on Cingular. He told me something about the Cingular data service being really inferior, and that it would hinder the device. I really want one too... but I really dont want to switch over to cingular as I have heard nothing but bad things from my friends who have it.

I just got the Wing from Tmobile, and its pretty sweet... although its basically the same as my MDA, in a smaller package.

I have Cingular, now AT&T and think they are great.

But I already have an Ipod and a great phone. No need to pay a ridiculous amount of money to get a device that combined them both. Plus, it's only 8GB and the camera quality is bad!!

The first gen of the iPhone does not support 3G so it will not be near as fast as the next gen. I have used the 3G network all over Chicago and it rocks! I would wait for a little of the hype to wear off and the 2nd gen phones to come out. JMHO

Does he realize that Cingular has an almost 3 year exclusive deal for the iPhone? Not coming out on anything else for a long time...

I'd rather get a massive tattoo in the middle of my chest of two eagles fighting a snake.

And you know how much I love tattoos.

From what I hear, as I have a friend that has researched this in great detail, AT&T had to upgrade their network in order to support the I-Phone. No other carrier has the network features needed for the I-Phone to function properly. AT&T had to make a significant investment and, in return, they got a 3 year exclusive deal. From what Steve Jobs even says, the I-Phone does not work as well over the cellular network. It works best in Wi-Fi.

Got it. Love it. Works just fine on the At&t Edge network and really fast on WiFi. I switched from Sprint and I haven't had a problem with dropped calls since then. I had a Treo 700p (for sale BTW) and it loaded sites from the internet much slower. Yesterday I loaded satellite maps of a friend's house while out for dinner (not WiFI). It was fast and my friend was astonished. THen we watched some You Tube videos which loaded pretty fast and ran flawlessly. Don't listen to the folks who researched and decided it wouldn't work. Just ask someone who actually has one!
The At&t deal is for 5 years. Since the iPhone has a sim card it may be unlockable and therefore usable on other networks but no one has done it yet.

Don't misunderstand me, my buddy that did the research wants the phone in a bad way. He is dying to get one, but he can't because it is AT&T and he is locked in with Sprint.

Me? I am a gadget geek. I carry a Razor phone loaded with GPS and I have a Blackberry that I also use for web browsing. They are good enough. If they were any better, then I would have my face in them all of the time and I have my face in front of a computer enough as it is. The last thing I need to do is get myself "that" connected. The reason I carry a bberry and a separate phone is because I intentionally separate myself from my e-mail at night and on weekends. I always carry my phone, I do not always want to carry my e-mail.

By the way, another thing about the I-Phone is that it does not support enterprise mail applications. If you use a bberry or Treo or whatever on enterprise mail, you will still need to have it because the I-Phone does not support it.

Exchange support will be available in the 3d quarter according to this press release:

I am in telecommunications. Trust me, any time a telecommunications company forecasts availability, add at least 1 or 2 quarters to their forecast. So, since we are already in the 3rd quarter, I would bet that this will likely be 4th quarter or 1st quarter 2008 before available. In the mean time, you will need to carry a bberry and the I-Phone.

I wouldn't be surprised about that. I don't need exchange availability so it's only a matter of academic interest to me. I can just carry my nice, new iPhone.

bought it today.. i like it alot.. the only thing I dont like is that its hard to text message.. but i'm getting better at it already..

:D

'It takes a while to use the keyboard but one you get used to it it goes fast. Congratulations.

ya i just figured out you can slide your finger over the key until it makes the letter you want big instead of just poking it. Much easier that way.

PITW, I'm glad you like the iPhone. I hope the service is better on that than it has been on my Blackjack. I switched to AT&T in March and I get at least 1 dropped phone call a week. Considering I only may 2-3 calls a day, that's a lot!

I have the sliver that i'm replacing the iphone with and I never get dropped calls on it.. I'm happy w/ cingulars serivce and i've had everyone but verison so I feel like cingular is the lesser of the evils.

Maybe it's just the Samsung phones on the AT&T network, but all my phones (4 Samsungs) get dropped calls on a regular basis. It's a bit disappointing considering how much I spend each month for the service ($200/mo).
