OT: Attention Gamers

Xbox 360 is sweet though. I'd love to get xbox live hooked up and play against some of you guys for frags. :)

This sounds like a good idea to me... I'm already on Xbox Live, just waiting for more of you to get connected.

Back in August, when I got my Wii, I wish I had enough cash in the bank to get two of them... I found out a month ago that my parents (of all people) are interested in getting one... I was thinking that would be the perfect combo gift for the two of them, but all of my recent searches have turned up empty.

I've tried the "Wii Alert" messages that are delivered to your cell phone in the form of a text message, but the problem with that is, that the messages come from a different timezone, so you're essentially screwed... in my opinion, the best bet is to just try random stores at random times.

Out of the three next gen gaming systems (and I own all three of them), I still contend that the 360 is the best of the bunch... just for the library of great games that it has, as well as the Xbox Live online "experience".

The xbox is definitely on the list.

Being new to this system and not doing much research yet, what do I need to go "Live" with it? Certain accessories that are a must? Games?

When you first get your console, you receive a free month of Xbox Live's "gold" service... this is the service that costs $50 for a 13 month subscription, and I feel that it's worth every penny.

You can renew your account before the trial month ends with your credit card info being sent to Microsoft directly through your 360, or you can buy a renewal card at any retail store for this purpose... I usually do the latter, as I am one of the paranoid people who doesn't like giving out credit card info over the 'net.

Accessories that are a must? The "play and go" controller charger... worth every penny of the $19.99 charge... you won't be spending tons of cash on AA batteries for your wireless controllers.

FYI: If you get the premium 360 console bundle, you'll get the headset for free, so you won't be spending anything extra to get that for online voice communications... it also comes with a short whip of CAT-5 cable, so you can connect to your router, if it is that close to the TV you're setting up the 360 on.

Games that are a must? Mass Effect, Assassin's Creed, Call of Duty 4, Rainbow Six Vegas, skate... and many others, depending on what kind of games you're into.

SO what you're saying is, I should take you with me when I am ready to buy so I get the essentials?? :D

Specific Bundle packages I should look out for? Again, just starting to really look into this. Always been a PS owner.

If you take me with you, you wouldn't go spending more than you have to, that's for sure... but I digress...

Definitely go with the Xbox 360 "premium" bundle... it comes with all of the extras, including the 20gb hard drive, the headset, and the CAT-5 cable.

Here's a picture of the premium bundle...

If you have an extra $100 to spare on the 360 console, I'd say you should go with the elite bundle... which gives you the ability for having HDMI output, and a 120gb hard drive (which I upgraded my premium console with a few months ago)... the console comes in a new black color, and has the black controller included... this is for the more serious gamers out there, but if you're looking for top of the line stuff, this one is it!

Here's a picture of the Elite 360 bundle...

I read somewhere that the Elite is having some freezing issues after a decent amount of playing time.

I don't need the top of the line, although it would be nice, I don't need it really. Just want something to have fun with , beat the bro-in-laws on, have fun with the fellow reefers and something for my nephews when they come over for the weekend.

In my quick search for the "premium" bundle, I did not find what you posted. I saw the pro, core and special edition bundle....

Then it's the "pro" bundle that I posted a picture of in my old post... you can see the difference between the bundles when you're at the store... it lists on the side of the box exactly what it comes bundled with.

Core bundles come without the hard drive, headset, or CAT-5 cable... it's the most basic bundle that's out there.

Gotcha...best place to buy? Toysrus? I really don't like BestBuy...Circuit City? Walmart? Target????????

It's a matter of personal preference, I guess... I'm fairly certain that the bundles are priced the same, no matter where you shop.

I don't step foot in Wal-Mart stores, so I don't know if their prices are more "competitive" than other stores...

The 360 is going to be the same price at every store. At Costco you can get a bundle with an additional wireless controller and maybe a game for a lower price than purchasing each item individually.

Check the ads in Sunday's paper to see if any store is throwing in anything for free with the system. I got my second xbox360 on Black Friday and got a Guitar Hero 2 bundle with it. Unfortunately that system died in 2 weeks and I'm now on my third one... at least I have HDMI now.

Count your blessings... I've gone through four "different" systems... thankfully, I bought the $50 two year extended warranty, so I haven't had to pay a penny for the repairs and/or exchange of my system through Microsoft.

I hear different things about the 360's reliability... some people I know have had nothing happen to their systems, and these are launch day consoles that I'm talking about... these systems are getting close to being two years old now.

Then there are systems like mine, which I got almost a year after it launched, and it's been repaired (or exchanged) on three separate occasions.

The moral to this story? Definitely purchase some kind of extended warranty... I do the same for all of my consoles, regardless who the manufacturer is.

Once you hook up your Xbox, you can set up Live on the Xbox. It's not difficult. It will guide you through the process. It's about $50 a year, and well worth it if you like gaming on-line or with friends.

As far as must have games, that's tough to say. Depends on teh type of gamer you are. Ones everyone can/will enjoy though are Guitar Hero and Rockband! Personally, I'm a shooter game type of a guy, so the Halo games are a must IMO. Tom Clancy's Vegas is pretty awesome. So is Call of Duty 2 and 4. Many sports games are fun to play. The list can go on for quite some time.

About the Wii, sorry man, I think it will be very tough to get one this week. When I got mine 6 months ago, there was only one in the Wal-Mart I found it in, and if I didn't buy it, there were 5 people right behind me that would have. I have never seen more then 2 Wii Units at any store I have ever been too. Nintendo is doing this the right way (although annoying as hell for the sonsumer). They are only releasing a small number of consoles at a time to keep interest way way up for the Wii. Ever since the release of the Wii, Demand has always been higher then supply, and the thing has been out for over a year now. This is because Nintento is limiting the amount of consoles released at any given time. I must say, it's working very well for them!

Wow guys, mine has never broken down, but Ihave heard this about the 360. I guess I'm just lucky so far.

It's funny though the 2 differing marketing stradegies. 360: Flood the market with a product everyone wants ASAP, and cross our fingers and hope that it works. Wii: Limit supply, keep demand up, and thus limit the amount of faulty systems, so that a higher percentage of consumers are dissapointed with the product.

Don't get me wrong, I love me 360, but the marketing of the Wii wins hands down!

Not to hijack, but BTW Cr33p, when are we going to get our GH on? After Christmas, I'm going to be all about Rockband. You wanna get an online band going?

I thought we'd be able to get some GH going at the next poker tourney... if possible, of course... I've been too "addicted" to Assassin's Creed and Mass Effect as of late to be playing anything other than those two games.

Doesn't matter to me though... but I will probably not be able to be much help with Rock Band, though... mainly because I have no plans to own the game any time soon.

Unfortunately the warranty update only covers the red flashing light issue. Mine started freezing up on me after only seconds of on time. From what I read, it may have been due to seperation of the motherboard from its housing. I sent mine in, but it is a $100 repair. That system did last me from launch until about a month ago, so probably better than most.

The last time that I had to send in my 360 (which was right before Thanksgiving), their customer service department had me send in my console and power supply... they completely replaced my power supply, and my 360 was "frankensteined" with the newer parts that they're supplying the Elite Xbox 360 models with... motherboard, heat sink, DVD drive, etc etc.

The amount that I paid for this repair? $0.

The value of demanding action be taken for having to send in my console three times now? Priceless.

^^^BUMP^^^

For those of you reading this thread, and you already have a 360, I highly suggest that you try playing Mass Effect... it is such an improvement on their older games (Knights of the Old Republic 1 and 2, Jade Empire), which were released back on the original Xbox years ago... only this time, MAss Effect is more of an RPG/shooter/adventure hybrid than just a straight up RPG like KOTOR 1 and 2 or Jade Empire ever were.

Trust me... what knowledge that I lack in the world of saltwater tanks, I make up for in video game knowledge... go out and give it a try.
