I am taking the CCW class tomorrow 9/8-9/9 at Shooter's World, 9a-1pm both days (2 days total), they sent me a 2-for-1 coupon for the $80 class.

I'm going either way, if you'd like to join me, you're welcome to split it or whatever you can manage. Let me know via PM.

Didnt they change the law that u dont need that anylonger?

Hey just because the law has changed doesnt mean that it isnt a good idea. Education is never a bad idea, especially when it involves something that is potentially dangerous. I say bravo for being a responsible gun owner.
Frizz

My only question was about the law, and was wondering why they would call the class ccw still rather that gun safety classic that license is no longer needed. Gun safety is important ..duh. I know nothing about guns, which is why I don't own one.

although a license is no longer needed an individual with the license has more "perks" i have been told than one without.

Only persons with a CCW permits may carry concealed in a bar and they may carry only if the bar is not posted no weapons allowed. That's pretty much the only perk I can think of. But since guns and booze don't mix, it's not much of one to me...

You are more likely to have the law side with you in a self defense case where you shot someone with your concealed weapon if you have proper training and know what used to be the law. You appear to be much more of a responsible member of society by having the certification. I don't have it, therefore I don't carry.

You also don't have to wait for background checks before purchasing firearms when you have a ccw permit

All true, they did relax the law, but with any new law there have not been court challenges or testing yet to clarify enforcement policies (for example, what is legal carry in your car? It may sound simple, but the legislation is incredibly vague on this and no one seems to be able to answer it definitively.)

The other thing you get is reciprocity with 30 other states who recognize AZ's CCW. Arizona's law does not grant you any rights outside of the state, but having an AZ CCW does get you a "pass" in those other states to carry. The other thing is it does give you a certain degree of "recognition" and proves, at least that you've taken the class, can hit a target at 15 feet, and paid some money to the state to formalize your intentions.

What the change has done is made the CCW class cheaper than it was before the latest change to the law, so it makes it almost a no-brainer to get it, although some might still think it's superfluous.

So, anyone wanna go????

I never thought of the aspect if the law probably being more on ur side if need be. That's a perk in itself :) Have fun!

this was exactly what i was told and definiltey a perk if you travel outside arizona to these states. dont want to accidentally be concealing in those states not thinking about it without your ccw

The school I work for used to regularly offer CCW classes free. You would still need a dps background check, fingerprint, and license fee but the class itself was free. I'll look into if they still do it and let everyone that is interested know when/if they are taking place.

I strongly urge anyone that is going to conceal or even open carry take one of these classes. There are so many things you can overlook that will land you or someone else in jail with a felony. Especially when conceal or open carrying with a felon in the car or even someone with a domestic violence charge. When you conceal carry in your car every single person in the car better be legally able to conceal carry. Then there is the bigger issue of making sure you are mental and physically able to handle a firearm and what can come of using it.

I have taken the class 3-4 times over the last several years and learned something every single time. The law (law in general) is a crazy thing to interpret.

Yes, indeed. I also recommend the book "The Arizona Gun Owner's Guide", for sale in most gun shops.

Here's an interesting one: If someone is stealing your property (like your car for instance), you are allowed to draw your weapon and threaten them, but you are not justified in using deadly force (i.e., shooting them), so you can point your gun at them, tell them to stop, but if they drive away, so long as they don't threaten you with bodily harm, you cannot do anything but watch them.

If you do more than that, well, your punishment will depend on how good a shot you are.

I love it: "people in Arizona carry guns, so you better be careful who you are messing with" that's classic.

As much as I'd like to go, I dont want to do the 2 day course. That, and I already promised some family that I would set up a group trip to Shooters World for the class. Guns....... Its a family thing for us.

from recent headlines and related to discussion. Note he isnt being charged at all:

That is an incredible story. What's up with this at the end:

Chandler police have arrested seven other men and plan to recommend that they be charged not only with robbery but with murder because the slayings occurred during the commission of another crime, Ramer said.

You can get charged with murder if someone blows away your buddy while you're both committing a robbery??? (Not that I'm unhappy about this.)

For every 10 of these stories, unfortunately, there is also a Harold Fish.
