That's the problem with new chairs, they save the hiking... but then everyone can get to what used to be the stashes. There have been rumors about a high speed quad into Palisades. I will have mixed feelings about that one too if it ever happens.
Do either of you guys ride backcountry (not resort accessed)? I wanted to get into it as there are a lot of spots around the wood. Me and a buddy did a week class on avalanche avoidance and rescue at Bear a couple of years ago. I was planning on doing the WFR cert also. We were all fired up about it but he decided to move away for a while to finish school.

exactly, the stashes start disappearing, but then again, new ones start popping up too. the rumored palisades chair wont happen in the near future. approved plans for the next several years are discussed in the kirkwood master plan, which includes new and upgraded chairs mostly on and to the backside. theres a good map here: http://www.fs.fed.us/r5/eldorado/projects/kirkwood/

well i know who i'm taking into the backcounty next time.
my buddies an i have spent a lot of time in the backcountry around tahoe and none of us have any training. pretty dumb since ive seen a lot a hairy stuff, including a large avalanche heli-skiing in alaska .

Do you do environmental impact? Someone was telling me that Kirkwood was failing all of their EI stuff and it was going to delay some projects. Either way they do need to upgrade the backside... Chair 4 is always long and cold!
I would be pumped to get out there. I'm probably way out of shape after missing most of last season and having a mediocre season before that, but I shape up pretty quick and can hold my own. As far as training I don't know that a week does a lot of good but it can't hurt. I know how to dig pits (not fun), look at crystals, and do a rutschblock test. Also have done some single and multi-burial rescues (mock). Doing this as exercise was nerve racking enough (especially when in the rescue leader role)... I would never want to have to dig friends out.
I hope you guys at least ride with transceivers, probes and shovels and go one at a time. We have rode in a lot of the backcountry accessed areas from kirk without the above which is also not smart since there is no help around... false sense of security. Overconfidence is one of the top reasons why people end up in slides in the first place.
p.s. Cool link. Is that "Thimble Peak" chair going in for next season too?

haven't heard anything about delays, they better pull it together.
the new thimble peak chair and the upgrade of the backside chair to a high speed quad wont be for a couple seasons. the new red cliffs chair also looks interesting. seems like a strange location, but should get lots of afternoon sun.
so glad they started off with the surface tows, since they really access most of the new terrain.
sounds like a good class you took. your totally right, being in any part of an avalanche is nerve racking. its amazing how the brain just shuts down in those high stress situations and you forget all the stuff you know.
we ride pretty safe, generally. i dont carry anything at the resorts. they dont usually let you go out back until the conditions are safe. plus, where do i put my beers? i do carry that stuff if the situation requires, unfortunately, its been a while since i needed it.
gettin all stoked for snow, how many more months?
