OT: fishing regulations in Bimini

CoRPS

Big Time Reefer
Just want to make sure I've got this right.... 20lbs of fish, no conch, no spearguns, and 6 dolphin/wahoo per boat?! This can't be right, although I haven't been there in years. Anyone in the know wanna confirm? I was planning a trip to go in january but this sounds ridiculous.

Also what are the fees upon entering?

The crackdown on fishing in Bimini is ridiculous, but from what I understand you are listing the regs correctly. Its not worth the fuel imo.

I would check with ministry of tourism on that. I fished a tournament 2 years ago with those stipulations but last year it was the old rules. I just moved here from nassau.

Go to their tourism site for all the info you are requesting. I find it much easier to just buy the conch by the pound from the locals. When we do get conch, we usually have a local on board with us.

I go to bimini often in the summer. The fee to check in is 150 for boats under 35 ft, and 300 for boats over 35 ft. They allow a second visit for free if done within 90 days. The rules were relaxed a bit after the initial rules, I forgot all the specifics they are on the bahamas offical web site. If your going and dont look like a commercial guy, I wouldnt worry about the rules as bimini only gets a grey patrol boat from nassau once or twice a year usually on big weekends. By the way you are allowed a few lobster now, I think 6 per person or boat, and yes you must use a sling not speargun. Good luck! Also I have seen you mention on another thread that you want to trade corals. If your willing to drive to davie----we can do some trading, were you will win. Send me a pm if interested.

Directly from their site

Spearfishing
Hawaiian sling is the only approved spearfishing device. You are not allowed to use scuba gear or an air compressor to harvest fish, conch, crawfish or other marine animals. Spearfishing is not allowed within one mile of the coast of New Providence, within one mile of the south coast of Freeport, Grand Bahama and within 200 yards of the coast of all The Out Islands. Spearing or taking marine animals by any means is prohibited within national sea parks.

To most this is not possible. The fort is about 60 miles one way, there's no fuel out there so you better have a big fuel tank. Also some can't or don't want to trailer all the way to key west, then make the trip to the fort.

with all those stipulations it might just be
better to take a trip to the dry tortugas

Steve honestly, I doubt it. I've got 5 people including myself on a 20' SeaCraft! Some say I'm crazy for going over there in that boat, but I don't think it'd be a problem

As long as your boat and equipment are reliable and you pick your days right you'll be fine. A couple of years ago a group of jet skiers crossed over, I also know a guy that has crossed many time in his flats boat

You sir are crazy to make that crossing alone. I have a 22' that does not leave sight of land, never would dream of doing the crossing in it.

I almost made the crossing in my 16.5' Hydrasport. I was 45 miles out, trolling dolphin, then trolled back. Weather is the limiting factor.

If the weather is calm the trip won't be a problem. I have a 2.5 week window to work with.

I don't!! Lol, it's a nice yamaha 150 4-stroke. But I got good conections with seatow, tow boat us and h2o tow so I got that covered worst case scenario.
