so im wondering if anyone has any house plant next tom their tank or what house plants will grow using the tanks lights.
Or will any plant grow under their light spectrum?
When even i go to lowes and see their plants i always wonder. they have some cool exotic looking ones but i have no where to put them except next to my tank and im wondering if the light would be enough for it to grow and flourish or would it die and be a waste?
Thanks for any input!

After upgrading our lighting we were left with a couple banks of T5 lights. We had about a 50/50 mix of white and actinic lights. Whites were probably 14k, or somewhere close. Geissman bulbs, relatively new.

This spring we started a lot of vegetables and annuals in house from seed. On a whim I convinced my horticulturist coworker to start some plants under these lights since we already had everything on hand. A couple pieces of 2x4 and some screws and we had a nice little setup. These were grown in a basement room with no natural light.

The plants did surprisingly well under them, our canna lily plants practically exploded in growth, and we had lettuce plants that grew under them all the way until they seeded out.

So the light is enough for all the plants we tried. Just have to worry about salt getting into the soil, heat, etc.

I'm not going to act like I know what I'm talking about or anything but the owner of my company is upgrading our crappy fluorescent lights to T5's in the next few months. I work at a wholesale plant and flower distributor. I'm not sure that the T5's will promote growth in the plant department, but I can't imagine they would hurt by any means. I don't know what the Wattage is in the ones he's getting vs any T5 for fish tanks but just relaying some basic info.

Probably doesn't help your answer but gives a little insight anyways.

It works. I grow 2 plumeria plants next to my tank in the winter. They bloom just fine, espescially in a season where they should go dormant.

What type of lighting do you have and wattage? what spectrum around about are they? Does the light hit the plant directly or is it filtered thru the water and tank ? sorry about all the questions just thinking of maybe trying my hand at a plumeria.

I used ATI t5 lighting. I had the plants on each side of the tank. The top of the plant was about half the way up the side of a 90G tank. I usually keep my light about 5-6 inches above the top brace. I don't get much light off the top but there is some. The plant grew straight up instead of reaching towards the tank so I'd assume it was from the top and not through the glass, but I'm no expert. I actually posted this exact thread a few years back lol. I didn't get a response so I just went ahead and did it. It worked out quite well. I'm probably going to let them go dormant this year because my new setup doesn't allow me to place anything on the side, and I do not want to take up more space in my sump room.

A friend of mine uses a desk lamp with the same home depot bulb a lot of people use on their refuguims.

Good luck.
