OT: Looking for Iron test kit

I need to test my well water - anybody have an Hanna iron checker or similar that I could borrow? Or does anyone know a good place to get free testing?

I don't have a test kit to lend but whatever you find make sure you check the detection limit. I don't believe any hobby grade kit detects down anywhere near the level of iron in NSW but I have no idea what to expect for well water.

I expect our well water to be in the 0-3 ppm range. Hanna makes an Iron "checker" with resolution .01ppm, accuracy ±.04ppm±2% of reading. Range is 0-5ppm. Maybe I'll just buy one...

Take a raw water sample to either Culligan or Anderson and ask them to test it....Only drawback is them hounding you to buy their products. I can't think of anyone else in your neck of the woods that could do this for you.....Are you looking for dissolved iron? You may have iron bacteria....and you can do that test simply by taking the tank lid off your toilet and looking in side....Run your hand up the inside and if it is orange and slimy you have the bacterial version.

The guy from AquaSource in Honeoye is coming out tomorrow to do some tests. Might as well let the guy with the expensive test kits do the tests for me. Then I have to decide what kind of system to get. I know I have super hard water (48 grains per gallon) so I'll need a good softener. I also have lots of sulfur, not sure ppm though.

For dealing with sulfur, the main three types of systems are:
-chlorine (either liquid injection or pellet) $
-hydrogen peroxide injection $$
-ozone $$$

anyone have experience with any of these well water systems?

Chlorine and a little in hydrogen peroxide....Do your self a favor and get the CL2 pellet unit for the top of the well and use that as your retention system....Then all you need in the house is a whole house carbon filter and softener.....Maybe a particulate filter on the system before it goes to the rest of the house. Kill it at the source and you will save space on a retention tank for the CL2 and I would not recommend an aeration tank in the house either....not necessary if you treat the source.
