OT: Need advice on new TV

Hello all,

Finally our old TV died, so I'm in need of something new!! We have a 37" LCD from Samsung in our basement rec room that I love, so I'm going with Samsung.

Questions are:
I want at least 40", can go bigger. Whats a good size? Room size will have us sitting 12-15 feet away from the TV.
LCD, LED or Plasma?
Anything else you may have as advice.

I'm not getting a 3D TV, I'd like to let that technology mature a little more before diving in.

We have HD service, so I know I'm going 1080 with this and plan on wall mounting it (77" wall).

The plan is to get something in the next couple days.

At that distance you won't be able to see any difference between 720p and 1080p

I'm partial to Panasonic plasmas but Samsung makes very good lcds and plasmas.

I would pick the largest 720 that will fit in the space that you have.

I have a 60" LCD and I love it. Its about a year old now. If you can afford it I say go with the LED. They are so crisp and sharp.

But remember if you go with the LCD the blacks aren't truely black. Were the Plasmas TV's are. The salesman showed me this by putting the LCD and Plasma next to each other with a black scene on the screen.

The last factor is gaming. Will a game console be used on this at any time? PS3, Xbox 360?
 
I have a samsung 40" 1080 LCD and love it. Walmart has it for $628!!

Check out Buy.com for the wall mount - half the price of going local.
 
If you don't mind the cost, LED all the way. You can't get a better picture.

I don't think there is enough of a difference in LCD or Plasma anymore as long as you go for quality (like Samsung).

720p vs. 1080p? Although Mike is correct about quality I think you'll be hard pressed to find a 42+ in 720 anymore and if you do the price difference is probably negligible.

You'll probably find your best deal on a 42" but just like aquariums, bigger is ALWAYS better! :inlove:

We have a 52" Sony LCD and I love it. We sit about 10-15' and it looks great.

Just did a quick check on Newegg and they have a Samsung 55" 120Hz LCD for $1750 with free shipping.

Anyway JMHO. 'grats on the new TV whatever you choose.

I have a 50 samsung plasma and I love it. I had a 50 lg plasma before the screen broke and the samsung has a way better pic.
 
I have a 46 Samsung LCD. I think the 1080 is the way to go, especially if you are looking to go blue ray. (the Avatar blue ray is spectacular)!!
 
I have a Samsung 46' LED 120Hz TV. We love it, awesome contrast, no blur during sporting events. Internet enabled, the new ones have the Netflix thing built in.
We sit about 12' away.
The only items that use 1080p is the blu ray player and some Playstation video games but it is almost a standard feature these days for the TV's.

Panasonic Plasma will be just as good picture as LED. The biggest downside is that plasmas have much worse glare when in direct sunlight. Though there is a very bad problem with 2009 panasonic plasmas where the blacks essentially turn grey over time. It is supposedly fixed in 2010 models. (lucky me, I bought a 2009 without doing my research but havent had it long enough to see the problem)

To be honest, people get caught up in getting the very best tv (or what they think is the best, since lots of people hold different opinions) - but unless you are an absolute videophile you will be satisfied with 90% of the name brand tvs on the market. People talk about the different advantages of each tv, but you likely wont notice or care when only one is in your living room with nothing to compare to.
 
If you can find a model from last year you'll pay 50% less than the current models. I buy my electronics from one company until they disappoint me Samsung is out here is why. Samsung (who makes my '07 model LED DLP) refused to recognize that 6 capacitors on the power supply were faulty. By the time my tv started having issues many people online had found a work around, many people had complained to the company. The technician told me that we could trouble shoot and he started with unplug your tv from the UPS and plug it directly into the wall. I gave up before they could send a technician to tell me that they wanted to replace my power supply for another using the same faulty components. I paid a guy 100 bucks to install new caps instead. I'd like you to buy a sharp AQUOS, get it calibrated.

Another topic all together was that I bought the tv from an online company that sold refurbished samsungs online. The delivery truck arrived with a treadmill for me. When the TV arrived it was damaged, the box was beat to hell. The online company took good care of me and accepted the return (by the time it was returned to california the guy said it was in peices). Anyway the second tv arrived and the box was just as damaged. I would recommend that company but I think they had to close because their shipping company destroyed all their merchandise. I'd go with a local company rather than ship another tv next time around.

Last thing is if you are a videophile i'd recommend the guy who did my calibration.

I just bought a Samsung LN40C630 a couple weeks ago, I got it from newegg, although it is cheaper on crutchfield now and has free shipping. It is a great tv looks and performs great! it is a 1080p and 120hz, Samsung has some really great tvs out right now.
If you can afford it I would def go with LED but they are very expensive right now.

Last night the wife was saying No to anything 50" or bigger. Today we talked to a friend who said they have a 50" TV and wishes she (key here is the gender reference) had a bigger TV. Looks like 55" is where we are going.

Never heard anyone say "wish I got a smaller tv" :cool:
 
Move the 40" from the basement upstairs and get a projector and a 10' screen. I love mine.

I'll post some pics later.

i'd get something that is 3D ready. In 2 years, everyone is going to want 3d, I promise. I'm waiting til the summer when ps3 has the firmware update to play 3d blurays. If your next tv purchase will be 10yrs away, think about staying ahead and not immediately being behind. Its like buying an 06 impala right before the new design comes out and you hate yourself.
