and I thought the cicadas were bad

I have 2 Oak trees in my back yard and seems we are infested
with no way to control it
My husband and I first thought we were attacked by mosquitos
now in the 2nd week of old bites and new bites it appears I live in an area that has a huge outbreak

I read the CDC reports and many of the Kansas and Nebraska reports
the best way to avoid the mites is to stay indoors from August through October with windows shut
that is out of the question
DEET may or may not work
my largest bite rash is 3 inches in diameter and about 10 days old

I had some very large welt like bites (quarter to half dollar size) I thought were mosquitos, but they only lasted a couple days...not sure though now.

My wife got them bad from head to toe. She went on vacation with the kids and landed in the ER in New york.

I've got a handful of them and they itch from time to time, but not too bad!

So far this year, I think I've only seen fly & mosquito bites. I'm a bit surprised as we have loads of 40 yr old oak trees in our subdivision.

If you don't like the drowsy feeling of Benadryl pills, they have a topical liquid gel version. It can work wonders if you put it on bites the first day or two. You have to pat it into the skin to get the best results, not just rub it on the surface.

Nasty indeed. I"ve treated a half dozen patients since monday with this stuff. Most effective is probably a strong steroid cream that you can get from your doctor. Benadryl may help with the itch but it makes you drowsy so I recommend trying Claritin instead.

I'm staying out of the yard this weekend for sure!

Monday night I had a nasty fever and headache that lasted 3 days from these guys, motrin helped, but by 4am I was drenched in sweet and wishing i could call off work
I got quite a few more bites now and the fever seems to be coming back
If I can wake up enough I might try beer
or try to get a doctors appointment for sometime next week

I guess 2004 in Kansas was the last outbreak and that 1 lasted 2 months and effected 54% of the population of crawford county Kansas and spread throughout Kansas and 3 neighboring states

I heard if you do not spend more than three hours outside and take a warm, not hot, shower with strong soap you should be able to remove most of the mites. Do not put the clothes you were just wearing any where but in the wash, as you do not need the mites in your bed. It is said that the mites tend to wait three or four hours before biting.

today it is cold and rainy so I figure it's safe to venture out and not get bit
but since it's cold and rainy I had to wear a dickie and rubbers to my towns wiener fest
took my wiener dog and daughters
wieners w/ cheese, chili you name it
the wiener eating contest was sick
the adult winner ate 6 in 3 minutes, that's with the buns!
my wiener dog ate a wiener w/ cheese in 2 seconds

I have 3/4 acre of oak trees and so far no bites here. Must be a rumor, LOL !!! But I'm still not leaving the house until Thanksgiving or so.
