I am looking to get a new Slug gun this year. What are you guys using or would you get if you were looking to get a new gun. I am currently leaning toward pump action as this will only be a deer gun, but I am open to semi-autos as long as they are not too expensive. Please keep this discussion politically correct and no explainations of what your gun can do on the out bound side are necissary...

I also do not wish to have this become an anti-hunting or pro hunting thread. I just want to know what guns are reliable, so I don't waste my toy budget....

I used to have a remington 870 express, never jammed and was pretty cheap. I wanna kill some stuff too, im tired of killing fish and coral, its just not bloody enough.

Thinking about getting a tag for shotgun, whether or not i fill it is the question.

I use a Rem 870 also. The best bang for the buck!! The Rem. 1187 is a very nice semi auto. It little expensive if only using it for a slug gun though.

I have used my dad's 870 wingmaster (over 30 years old) and love it. He was amazed at how fast and accurate I am with his own gun. He says I shoot and reload faster than a semi-auto...

Had a Winchester 1300 that I got used... One morning went like this... Shot once, huge 9 point dropped and gun jammed. 30 mins later gun cleared finally and 11 pointer at 75 yards CLICK misfire, second round fired and deer down. 1 hour later 12-14 point buck snuck under my stand (No Crap!!) As I aimed the deer bolted and ran straight away, 35 yards I pulled the trigger and the whole fricken firing mechanism FELL OUT THE BOTTOM!!!!!!!! 2 seconds later the rounds were jacked out of the magazine and the gun was spiked into the frozen ground. 24 hours later gun was parted out and sold on eBay...

Right now I am looking at getting my own 870 express black synthetic with full rifled barrel or the Bennelli Nova, both look like great guns. There are also some great deals on Franchi and Stoeger Semi-auto's (both brands are made by Benelli). I will let you guys know what I end up with.

I bought a Franchi I12 and absolutely love it. Fast action, light and it looks good too. You get 5 chokes with it and the sites are great. I cannot think of anything I do not like about it....ohh wait...you cannot hip shoot it because of the inertia system. It needs the pressure from you shoulder to cycle the shells.

Like you said...it is made by Bennelli but less money. Don't buy the Stoeger. I guess they are made in a different plant and they do not have the quality. The salesman at Sheels even told me to do some research if I though I wanted one. Los of bad news out there on them.

I did read the stoegers are hit and miss. It seems the ones made in Turkey are alright, but the ones made in Brazil are junk. Good to know about the Franchi.

I've got a Mossberg pump 12ga with 3.5inch mag chamber that I picked up new for a song at WalMart. Love it. Every bit as good as my Rem 870 express

I have a Mossberg 500 that I would trade for frags. They too seem to be hit and miss. It is an accurate gun, but it is very prone to jam.

I have a benneli nova that I bought last year for pheasant and love it. I have had no problem with it thus far. I is a fairly inexpensive shotgun and very low maintenance. extremely accurate to. I think its by far the best bang for my buck.

Do you know anyone that has run a slug through one? With the slug barrel...

A friend of mine has a Benelli and shoots slugs through his all the time and it is fine. I actually shot 5 slugs through mine and at 100 yds hit a clay pigeon 3 times. The other 2 were only inches away.

Just get a SBE II and be done with it

I have 2 remington 870's Love them both!!! I've shot slugs through both of them and they're both really accurate and that's without a rifled barrel. Ones just an open barrel (no choke, the end of the barrel got blown off) the other one I just shoot with and improved cylinder choke tube in it.

I'm a remington man I love them. I've carried an 11-87 before as well. I'd personally rather carry my 870 it's not worth lugging around the extra couple pounds the 11-87 weighs to have the semi-auto. Remington also just came out with a new automatic 105CTi I believe is what it's called. Supposed to be pretty nice. Not sure on the $$$ though. It loads and ejects the shells out the bottom their is nothing on the sides of the receiver.

As for the Franchi. I carried my uncles 20 gauge Franchi last weekend when we were pheasant hunting and that thing is LIGHT!!! Probably barely 4-5lbs. He's been having problems with it getting jammed up and not reloading the next shell though. The people at Franchi just told him the steel just needed to "bond" and then it would be fine. They are a very nice gun though! He hasn't shot slugs through it yet though so I can't comment on that.

If you want something that can kill deer and do it cheap and accurate go with the 870 with the rifled barrel and you won't have any problems.

I am now leaning more than ever toward the 870 fully rifled. For the price of a semi auto I can have a Deer 870 and buy a whole seperate Bird 870 w/28inch barrel and remchoke system.

It comes down to, would you rather have 2 guns in one or 2 guns??? You can guess my answer

I've got two mossbergs, an extremely short barreled 500 and a 5500 mk II. I've never, ever had the 500 jam, and the 5500 only jams when I put cheap walmart birdshot shells through it. I fully admit though that I know less about guns than I do about how women's minds work. Clean them, shoot them, that's about it. The guns not the women.

Just sayin'. Have had good luck with Mossbergs.

Hmm good to know. Not a popular opinion on the shotgun forums, but I do like to know that the legendary 870 can have a few issues also. Bah... Selling my truck tomorrow, but I do have to choose a gun this week. I will keep you all posted as to what the decision is and I will post pictures of the end product...

My Mossberg has never jammed and I've put a ton of shells through it. That said, if I were given a choice of an 870 express or a Mossberg for the same or similar price I'd chose Remington every day of the week and twice on Sunday. Can't go wrong w/Remington. Barrels and chokes are easier to find also.

Well the deed is done...

I went the the local gun shop today to check out the guns we have been talking about and actually left with what I believe is the most bang for the buck.. (lame pun intended)

I looked at the Benelli line first as I was leaning that way when I walked in the door. The Nova combo with slug and bird barrel was under $500 which was a good start. I then was handed the Nova and immeadiatly gave it back. It just did not feel like a solid made gun and was far too noisy for me.

I then had him pull a Super Nova. Now this is a great gun. Similar to the Nova, but a lot more sturdy feel to it, so I priced a slug barrel... Over $250 for the barrel so back the super Nova went.

The Franchi was next, but he could not find a rifled slug barrel made for the gun, so out it went. I will look to this gun again if I need a bird gun. It too felt and shouldered great at a great price.

Now it was time to look to ole faithful, the remington 870 line. I was pretty set on wanting an all black gun, but the combo prices were very convincing that I could deal with a little fake wood grain... The 870 rifled slug combo was $415. Not too bad, but not black. The 870 in black was the gun I wanted...

Then the salesman pointed to a canatlever slug barrel w/ scope from Mossberg for the 870. Put them together and I walked out with an all black 870 with 24 inch ported and fully rifled slug barrel, scope, and a 28inch bird barrel for $450.

Sounds like you got yourself a nice deer killer!

What did you thnk of the franchi? I assume it was a 12ga.? Was it pretty light? My uncles is a 20ga. and it's WAY light. Also what kind of price did they have on it? I've kind of been keeping my eye out for a new bird gun.

Also seeing as you got yourself a new gun I'm going to steal your thread a little. Do any of you guys shoot blackpowder?

I've been looking at getting a muzzleloader and going late season this year. Just curious which ones you guys recomend. The one I'm leaning towards right now is the Thompson Center Omega. It felt pretty good when I threw it up at Cabelas a couple weeks ago. I've heard a lot of good about the new Knight visions but haven't actually talked to anyone that personally owns one or has even shot one.

What do you guys all shoot?

I used to have an 870 as well. Sortof wish I didn't get rid of it. Dad got it for me for my 16th birthday. Ventilated rib, full choke, left handed. Nice gun. I really only shot trap with it though. I did get it dirty a time or two though. Got a pheasant once..
