I presently have a leaking gas tanked hot water heater. Thinking about replacing with a tankless electric or gas. Has anyone had good or bad experience with them? Does anyone know a reasonable plumber who might be able to install. I am asking here because I know you folks have seen it all, and pay attention to details. Thanks in advance!!

At my old office they installed one and the thing worked great. Hot water on demand. I also have a buddy that installed one as well. He said his plumber recommended he go with the size higher than what needed. No idea if that's good or bad advice. When our wh breaks. That's the route I'll be going.

Home Depot's installers fee isn't always that bad.

I have an electric tankless. I hear the gas models work better. I will probably go back to the tank when this one breaks. The reason is the inconsistency of the hot water. If you are the only person taking a shower/bath then the tankless is great. However, if someone in the house turns on the hot water even for a few seconds it causes the hot water to change temperature. This is because the tankless heaters work based on the amount of flow. When another hot water faucet is opened this causes a flow change which in turn signals the tankless heater to readjust and causes the water to go cold again until the temperature is stabilized. It takes some getting used to but can be very annoying. Mine is about six years old, maybe the newer models work better.

IMO tankless water heaters are great. You definitely need to have the appropriate size for your needs or you will have an issue like motor16 mentioned.
I can run two showers and the kitchen faucet at the same time with no issues.

Mr. White got one so I recommend it.

I installed a tankless gas Noritz about 10yrs ago. Its far better than the electric version, hot water on multiple outlets at same time. The Titan (common electric brand) has trouble competing and requires high amp wiring (although you need a gas line if you go that route).

No it is not gas. We do not have a gas line in my house. Electric would work fine if you buy the correct heater.

We had a tankless one for about 5 yrs, it just went bad recently, had a huge flood in my hs, anyways I have a great handyman that installed the new one and ran the thicker gauge to my breaker box. I bought the heater for $229 If I remember correct. Plus the install, very reliable guy. Pm if you're interested.

I just want give you advice before buying one of these. Take a look at how many gpm it can handle then determine the size by your needs. I knew I needed at least 5 gpm to give me hot water in both bathrooms at the same time.
Good luck.

Marc, I recently changed my house original 80 gal water heater, I changed to a Eco18 that has a lifetime warranty, the unit was extremely easy to install, and it works perfect, it only powers on when it detects the hot water running and shuts off immediately once you close the water. I was a little worried because I have a family of six (5 woman) but so far it has keep up with both showers and bathtub going at the sometime with no problems, i haven't yet seen a savings on the electric al bill but I am sure that I will once I get more data accumulated. I used a local plumber recommended by the manufacturers website

I do Ac for a living, I don't deal with these tankless heaters but I have a lot of customers that have switched to these. The biggest complaint I hear is that you can't have two sources of hot water going at the same time (i.e. Shower and sink). I talked to a plumber friend of mine about it and he said sizing is key and sometimes depending on YOUR needs to need to go bigger than mfg recommendations. It is also very important to have the right size wire pulled through if your current wires are too small.

I looked at going tankless. When I worked the numbers there was not an energy savings that would offset the cost of purchase.
Just no roi on the tankless.

If you need a guy to install that PM, my guy did a great job and ran the thicker gauge wires to my fuse box.Good Luck

The gas company offers very attractive incentives to switch to gas tankless. Covers almost the entire cost of the device.
