OT: Time Warner Cable and internet

I just moved to the Northridge area and I'm trying to find out how much basic cable is, not 200 channels, nothing fancy, just basic cable! (Which of course they don't mention on the website  )

Also, is there a cheaper alternative to $30 cable internet?

Time warner cable basic is $44 for me and Time warner have a $20 internet plan but they don't advertise it...You just have to ask.

Yea, it a little slower but I only surf the web at home so don't need all that speed.

TW cable internet is 50 for us up here in ventura. Those guys suck, twice they've accidentely zapped our modem searching for illegal users and it has taken at least a half hour on the phone each time to get the problem fixed

I was thinking of switching to TW cable/internet, but after reading so many horror stories I decided against it. I use Verizon DSL. If you get the cheapest phone line you can manage it comes to something like $30/month for their 1.5Mbps down package.

If you can get Verizon FiOS in your area, you should check that out. I have heard wonderful things about it.

For TV, I use DISH network. For the basic channels it's around $30/month, no cost for equipment. If you want to use them ask me for a referral number and you get a better deal (and I get some billing credit) : )

you can get basica cable, just ask for no digital channels, you dont want the box. The box is extra cost and the channels are included in the 'basic' DIGITAL package, but if you get straight cable out of the wall, it should be about $25.

I had Verizon land line, ($35), Dish Netwrk, ($40), and Earthlink, $40), and this was a COMBO package pricing...

I know have Time Warner cable, and Internet, ($100), go figure it is tabout the same cost, but now I dont have a land line, but who needs one now a

Also, verizon DSL or other DSL that goes through Verizon is CRAP... do not expect to use any home security devices, i.e. webcam or Aquacontroller online, or other device that needs an incoming IP address

It just wont work. and they will deny that anything is wrong on thier end and make you jump through hioops talk to third world contries, and eventually switch services.

When I switched, all my networking stuff started working automatically, I did nto even need to adjust or correct any settings, all of a sudden I started getting calls that my friends could see and access my aquacontroller and webcam

I was ****ed at myself for waiting the two months and dealing with tech support from Earthlink, verizon and all the equipment mfgs for the previous two months...

Anwys, I will not look back to dsl ever again

They suck

But for DSL we would need a phone line right? That would be a complete waste for us since our cell phones work great.

So judging by the responses, we should ask for basic basic non-digital cable and their unadvertised internet deal? Does anyone know the prices for Time Warner up here in the valley?

Yes, but since you are a student you probably have low enough income to get the $3/month "lifeline" phone service. I have it and don't have a telephone connected. Just used for DSL. My total bill is $35/month including taxes and fees for DSL+phone, both Verizon.

the life line is for low income, if they figure out you have dsl also, they will yank the low income status, no matter if you have low income or not..

left hand does not know what right hand is doing

i like dish network combined with my phone bill

its a better "package" deal...

I pay $41.99/mo for TW cable internet here in Van Nuys. I feel like a sucker every month the bill comes. I was thinking about switching to DSL based strictly on cost issues, but I have a home security system and was told it would not work properly (won't send a signal to alarm company/police/etc). I was told there is a filter that can be used but they won't guarantee that it will solve the problem. I'm guessing Bill (Bergovoy) knows more about it as he's already gone through the DSL headache.

No, I signed up for them all together at the same time with the same people, and it's on the same bill. I specifically told them I was only using the phone for DSL : )

We have Charter in our area. $99 package deal incl, digital cable, telephone w/ unlimited long distance in US and 3m cable.

We use our own cable modem to prevent the monthly rental.

the customer service rep is not hte hieracrchy, the life line is subject to verification, something they probably wont get around to doing, but in thier verification, if they see you have dsl or added features like call waiting or other stuff, they will either yank the features or yank the lifeline savings.

But no worries, they will probably never 'verify' your low income status.

And if you think about it, LIFE LINE is exactly that, a phone for people who can not afford a fone, for emergency purposes to contact family and friends for emergency or just whatever it takes to get along in life, it is not for someone to save money so they can get other features taht other low income families only dream about.

So, let your conscience be your guide on that and other things in life...

As long as you know the rules and or the intent, you are a grown person and I suspect you are capable of making decisions, then it is yours and yours alone as to what to get and or recieve or expect...

Bill

yup, a hundred bucks is what it will cost for phone, satelite, internet, or... cable and cable internet,

Cable is definately making bucks

Not to go too off topic with it, but the addition of DSL or other services to Lifeline does not affect the lifeline qualification -- that's based on income. In fact, they specifically offer long distance packages and call waiting, etc with lifeline. You have to attest to the household income, not household expenses. I don't think student loans qualify as "income."

FYI, Verizon also has a "Value Cents" plan which is available for anyone. It's $3/month but you pay for all calls, which would be none if you just use it for DSL. You probably have to add on a few bucks for taxes and fees.

realize tHAT ALL CABLE COMPANIES SUCK. we are addicted to their product so after a 3-12 month trial they raise the price on the CRACK was 89$ now 139$... time warner can just choke on a pretzel.

i used to call up charter every three months and get the promo priced CRACK, and they would understand and give it to me.

I tried that with time warner when the first switched, and the rep I spoke to wouldnt, that is why I switched to dish and ended up switching back...

I will try it again when my promo period ends

And I agree, I dont think verizon will audit the expenses, but they dont need to do much of an audit to find teh extra things you can afford, to make them investigate your income more diligently, so, I guess if you do qualify for low income benefits and can afford the dsl still, then you are good as gold...

Looks like I'll be asking real quick! Vonage for phone service here! Woo-hoo!:D

Is the $20 internet plan a promo or dial up speed? Seems like there would be a catch...

Or all my wireless neighbors could just be generous...
