Hiya, Question for all our Northern bretheren....

Thinking about planning a camping trip this summer up to the Adirondacks. Found a cabin on Silver lake (near Cranberry lake, just off Rt. 3) for $900 a week (peak). The guy seems really nice, pics of the place look perfect, and he mentioned he might cut me a break on the price...

How is it out that way? How are the blackflies at the end of June? Fishing up there much different than Fingerlakes? Not many panfish, eh? :) What about for the wifey and kids, we've got 2 youngins, who won't take to 'hikes in the woods' more than once or twice. Anything to do in Lake Placid if we made a day-trip? Saranac Lake? Bears a problem?

... C'mon, convince me it's worth it, and you got a mule to hump a cooler full of corals from Roch-cha-cha (and back). ;)

Ok been to Cranberry lake...late summer....Flies...you better bring some good repellent..mainly active in early morning and evening...Bears..so one with his head in the garbage can, licking god knows what. Fishing was good, but be patient, there are some nice size trout and bass...no pan fish, at least not where I was. Lots of nice hiking, MT biking...bring stuff for the kids, my son was bored quickly..I snuck his Gameboy along and waited till he was about to walk home before I gave it to him :)

Mac-

We lived in Cooperstown for years and took many trips up north. Black flies are worst in May, bears are really not a problem unless you're in a tent in the back woods, and trout are the primary fish to catch.

Lake Placid is very cool, ski-jumpers and aerial skiers go all summer long on wet astroturf for the jump and a big pool for the aerialists. You can drive up Whiteface mountain which is kind of neat. Some decent shopping on the main drag.

Our kids loved "Santa's Workshop" at the North Pole when they were little......near Lake Placid/Whiteface

santa work shop is in lake placid the great escape isn't far away from there in lake george

there are lots of sights in lake placid it is the home of the winter olympics.

The black flies are worse than the bears

and you will be close to me. I work in placid.

I grew up 10 min from Silver Lake, in a little town called Saranac. I live today about 15 min away in Peru. I love the area, not much to do commercially speaking unless you make the trek into Plattsburgh (30 40 min) or over to Placid (15-20), but the hiking, fishing and just relaxing are great.

I lived in Stratford Which is north east. of Utica and South west of Saranac You will hve problems with black flies in may unless it gets real hot and burns them off. There are many lakes and trout streams all over that region of the state. Lots of great fishing. For the kids up in lake forge is Enchanted forest water safari . .For you and your wife there are many nice pubs you can get dinner and a drink.

Thanks everyone!
We were talking w/ a neighbor's parents while at a birthday party today, who happen to live on Silver lake by Saranac. They pointed us to another website w/ a collection of cabins (name escapes me ATM), they recommended that's actually a bit cheaper. Closer to the 'stuff' near Lake Placid, too, which they said would be a real bonus (Cranberry lake's a good 2 hours they said).

So what's the best setup for trout, I gotta watch the teeth, don't I? :D

If you do stay near cranberry lake a good short hike would be to buttermilk falls which is in that area. Its been a few years, but if I remeber correctly it was a nice flat short walk and would make for a good picnic. I found some directions...

Directions

From the village of Long Lake, take NYS route 28/30 south for 3 miles to North Point Road (Hamilton County Route 3). This point is 7.7 miles north of the hamlet of Blue Mountain Lake. There will be a sign here that says "Buttermilk Falls." Turn right (west) onto North Point Road, and follow it for 2.1 miles. On the right will be a sign for Buttermilk Falls, and the parking area. Take the short path to the falls.

So the wifey took a long look at the pics on that second website (douglasresorts.com), and got a little turned off by the "Adirondack Rustic" feature... Plywood/pineboards on 2x4's wasn't what she meant when she said "cabin" in the Adirondacks. ;)
So we're back to going into the middle of no where near cranberry lake, and just bringing lots of stuff for the kiddies to play with. :D We'll prolly drive out that way one day and take a look at things for future excursions.
I'd actually like to go up that way one year Steph, that's why I'm trying to get the missus into venturing further away from home on our trips... Finger lakes are nice and all, but I've seen it, I want to go somewhere new now!

lol What's wrong with plywood!?
You know... I have an uncle somewhere on the streets of Toronto... that lives in a cardboard house, hobo engineered edition. He carries salt and pepper in his front pocket. :P
More on the fishing & black flies later, gotta reminisce with my father this evening. Haven't been to the Adirondacks in a while.

Mac, I highly recommend that place as a great fishing trip. So few cabins on that huge lake, you hardly see anyone the whole week. I wouldn't recommend bringing anklebiters though... heh

LOL! Alas, the Sheriff had a talk w/ me the last time I left them somewhere's.. Best to bring them w/ us if we're going to be staying in NY. ;)
