OT: What to do in Maui?

teamdulski

The Saltiest!
For our honeymoon we will be arriving July 1st and returning July 9th. I went when I was much younger and remember most of the usual spots and have been doing a bunch of research. Half the trip we will be staying at the Wailea Marriot by Ulua beach. The second half will be at the Maui Westin on the West Shore within walking distance of Black Rock. Of course we will have snorkel gear in tow. We will also have a rental car. Hopefully I will have some good pictures to post when we get back.

Anything random and not often talked about to do?

Thanks,
Adam

the sunrise at the top of the mountain, with a 30+ mile downhill bicycle ride to the beach is great!

I had considered that, but at ~$120 a person it seems pretty steep.

PM me your email. Been there twice. I'll forward an email to you from my brother who owns a condo there. Follow his recommendations and you'll have an AMAZING time.

Do the bike trip! The sunrise is one of the most amazing things I've seen in my life time. My buddy and his GF got engaged up there. It was like being on a different planet.

Great e-mail Mark. I especially liked the part about the road to Hana. Cracked me up because I remember being about 13 sitting in the back of the car wondering what the point was....there isn't one.

+1...well worth it! ... Nothing's cheap when you're on vaca!... Don't forget, that includes a $5 breakfast!!!!

+1 On the bike and sunrise, TOTALLY worth it. I will also DEMAND that you take that snorkel gear to the Ahihi Preserve when in Wailea. It's on the southern most tip of the island, very close to your hotel and TREMENDOUS snorkeling. I basically snorkeled and dove everything on the island and it was one of my favorites by far for snorkeling. No fishing allowed there so the fish are HUGE. Tangs bigger than footballs, gorgeous parrot fish, etc etc. and the reef is painfully shallow there which makes it amazing for snorkelers.

Turtle town is also a dive and snorkel site also near your hotel that has some really cool caves and swim throughs if your an adventurous or advanced snorkeler, including one cave with an air pocket in it. And of course lots of sea turtles :).

Lastly, if you're into hiking, here is a great one up the western side whose name escapes me ATM. I'll go look it up and report back though

This looks amazing, will certainly be a stop. Thank you skifletch.

Dude it was so cool :). One word of advice, because the preserve is essentially Maui's most recent historical lava flow (back in the 1700's methinks), it's still very lava-rocky. You wont' really find fine sand beaches there, so bring some sturdy sandals or even sneakers to walk to the water in. It's more about the tremendous snorkeling than it is the cool beaches. The parking lot for the snorkeling spot is the FIRST one on the preserve. If you hit La Perouse Bay, you've gone too far ;). You can see it with google maps just past the Makena Stables.

Turtle town offers a great combo of cool beach and good snorkeling. It's technically Maluaka beach and the snorkel/dive site is to the south end of the beach. The caves and swim throughs are on the southern end, kind of around the point.
