Very Newbie.
I just got a 65g 36Lx18Wx25H +/- I have a 20g fo Sump and would like some recomend for Pump (GPH) Overflow (GPH) and pipe diameter for plumbing im going live rock fish only for now. any help is welcome thanks.

I would go with a 600 GPH overflow with a 1" drain. How much head loss will there be from the sump back to the tank with the return line in feet?
The most common is 4 feet of head loss.
I like te Quiet One pumps myself, I have 3 and they all work great, arent expensive to purchase or run. The wattage is less than the mags. they make less heat and are quieter than Mag.
They wont rust like the mags screws do.
I would recomend a pump rated at about 700 to 800 GPH.

when you bought the tank did they tell you the overflow's GPH rating? if not you should ask them. this in combination with your head loss should help you get on the right track. 600 GPH might be a bit to much flow through a 20g sump.

Is the tank drilled? If it is a mega flow tank then your overflow should handle 600gph.
If it's not drilled then consider drilling it as you can run a bigger return.

I would say a mag 7 would be ok but might look at a mag 9 for the head loss.1/2 or 3/4 lines except the overflow should be 1" if it's a mega flow.

Why such a small sump? Can you go bigger?

its not drilled. head loss could be 3.5 to 4 feet. its a 20g sump for now cause it was free. :D
thanks guys

GPH should be 3 - 5x Display volume or so after the pumps head loss. That is ~ 200 - 325 GPH with that tank. Mag3 or 5 would be a good pump. If you aren't going to drill the tank (you should), get a quality U Tube based overflow. For that tank, with a Mag3, an Amiracle overflow would work well.

If you care about noise, and want a very high quaility, quiet pump, get an Eheim 1250.

You could use a mag 7 on 3/4 inch returns and a 1" drain. You could also go with a smaller pump and throw a small Tunze in your system.

I think you should be ok with a pump rated between 7 and 800GPH with your sump. I have a 12 gallon sump now under my 90 and it works just fine. The 1" drain will handle 600 GPH.

i made another thread cause i couldnt find this one sorry.
what is meant by liner size. and would the mag5 w/ 4' head work??? or should i just go mag7?
