which type of ozone generator is better?
the UltraLife Ozonizers are nice becuase they do not require an air dryer, but will require bulb replacement.

the redsea units are nice because they are adjustable, but do come with the added maintance of recharging the media every two weeks.

has anyone used both of the type units that can share any insight for me? thanks eric

I use the sander 25mg model which I bought from fishsupply.com
They have been making ozone generators for decades and are german made. I believe they are the pioneer of the first aquarium model ozone generators.

Stick away from the bulb one's, they are not as good.
Get the Red Sea unit, because even though the Sander 25mg is good, you will need a much bigger unit for a 230 Gal Tank. You need the Red Sea 200mg unit, also Red Sea has a better price to output ratio.

The quality of the sander unit is far superior built than the red sea unit. I have read some posts that their unit breaks down after a year and cannot be repaired, which in my opinion is a waste of money. People have had there sander ozone generators for years reported no problems at all. i would rather pay a little more for a ozone generator that is reliable.

I know people with both and like them. Both ozone (not UV) have pro's cons.

I have a red sea and like it. It is like protein skimmers some like euro reef; some like aquac and some like aqua medic. Or like ford vs chevy.

1) You Talk about "Some posts" dealing with break downs. This does not imply there is any real problem, a lot of people own Red Sea units so it's no surprise that "Some" will break down

2) I never said that Sanders was no good, all I said was that UV Bulb based units are not as good as Coronal discharge units because they produce less ozone and the bulbs need to be monitored and replaced

3) Lastly the Guy Sig shows that he has a 230 Gal Tank, A 25mg Ozinizer wont put a dent in a tank that size, he will need 100+mg to keep the Redox high. Thats the main reason I told him to get the Red Sea 200mg unit. I did some research since your last post and found that Aqua Medic makes a unit that looks like your Sanders and they have a 200mg version, that would work just as well as the Red Sea. If Sanders has a 200mg that should be fine also. BTW I assume it's a Coronal discharge unit and not UV Bulb.

Number 1# I think you need to read a little more carefully what I wrote. I never recommended the guy to go get the 25mg model I just stated thats what I was running on my system. Sander has models up 200mg, they are better built than red sea and they do not break down. My neighbor has the older sander model for over 20 years and still runs. After a year with red sea did you realize that if they break down you might as well go throw them in the garbage? From the people having problems with them you have to send them to a factory in isreal to get fixed and by the time you pay for repairs and shipping you can buy a new one!!

Number# 2 Where did I accuse you of saying that sander is no good? You need to read a little more carefully. The best ozone unit available is by ozotech but costs big $$$$$ and no way to adjust the output which can fry your tank. For a 230 gallon tank you don't need to inject 200 mg of ozone to keep it clean. According to the great big ozone thread here on reefcentral you don't need to inject huge amounts of ozone to keep the tank clean. I would recommend the 100mg model with ozone redox meter for the 230 gallon. But everyone has an opinion on ozone. According to the thread I seen a guy run a 50 mg model on a 220 gallon with excellent results.

Number# 3 Aquamedic and Sander are not the same generator, they may share similiar body styles but thats were the similiarities end. Unless they are trying to copy off sander. And yes the sander is corona discharge and agree the bulb ones suck. i did try one of those bulb ones a few years ago. threw it in the garbage.

ok so it's safe to say i need a coronal discharge type unit. at least you agree on one thing, haha. i thank you both for your help. does the sander units have the ability to be regulated, or the output to be modulated? while i have your attention how well do the milwaukee controllers work? is it worth it for the pinpoint controller. thank you again for opinions. eric

Yes the sander can be reugulated, they have the little turn knob on front of the generator. Milwaukee controllers work great, let me give you the link of the guy who has a sander model ozone generator and using the milwaukee controller on his deltec skimmer. He tells how to set it up and experiences.

Have you read Randy's article in this months Reefkeeping concerning ozone? Even though fish room is in the basement, I think I will stay away from ozone, and keep my water clean in other ways.

I use the 100mg Sander on my 150 gallon reef. But I dont use and air pump to push the air through....should I?

Thanks

cmhollis
What does the article from Randy do or state anything different (over th last 12 to 15 year)? Not saying anything negative but it is nothing new from what I have read.

I have ozone units in my home, along with million of other people, and they are fine in my house. Been using over 8 years. As long as then do not get above 0.05ppm of O3, you are fine. The kicker is it takes a lot to get above because it disapates do fast.

1) When he asked you said was that you have a Sanders 25mg, I assumed you did not look at his Sig so you did not realize what size tank he had. If he had bought a 25mg he would have been in trouble. Therefore you should have said, I have a 25mg but you need a Sander 200mg unit for your tank.

2) You keep talking about the unit breaking down, where is your evidence? I donââ"šÂ¬Ã¢"žÂ¢t see a thread on this forum where people are complaining about Red Sea units. Your friendââ"šÂ¬Ã¢"žÂ¢s one bad experience does not mean anything in the overall picture. Since Most people on this Forum seem to use Red Sea and I have yet to see a complaint thread with people pouring in saying "After one Year my unit is dead" I donââ"šÂ¬Ã¢"žÂ¢t think your point is justified.

3) You talk about Warranty etc. so I would ask you, if your Sanders breaks down out of warranty is it going to be worth fixing?

4) Ozone Injection needed varies from about .3 to .5mg/Gal according to bio load. In other words a 230 Gallon tank will need 69mg to 115mg and that is not including the sump water! If I were buying a unit I would definitely get one with Output to spare and not just a unit that meets minimum requirements.

5) Lastly I don't sell Red Sea or Sanders units, I donââ"šÂ¬Ã¢"žÂ¢t sell any SW stuff, so it is no big deal to me what he wants to buy, I was just letting him know to get a Coronal Unit (As he asked in his question) and that he needed at least a 200mg unit.
