Peacock spearer?

I unfortunately lost my peacock today and when I was taking down the tank I looked him over and noticed these...

Is this normal? I dont have alot of experience with these creatures but I thought they were smashers? Thanks for any help.

I just typed a response to this question, their spear has become specialized over time to break shells and such with the calcified portion at the base of the spear
