I had one for 4 years. It ate out of my hand too. At the time, I had a very light bio load. As soon as I started putting in lots of fish, it disappeared. It could be a coincidence, but I think good water quality, feeding right and not stressing it out were the key factors. The minute I added all the fish, I think it started stressing. They are a really cool fish to watch if you can get it to burrow up front.
I have a yellowhead (Florida) for a little over two years. I had a pair, but slightly after a year one died. My wife loves them so I recently added a juvenile from KP Aquatics. I use this tank sometimes as a QT tank like for my juvenile Regal angel (moved to my 300) and now a baby chevron tang which I will move to my 300 in a couple months. I believe like the previous poster they like to be in a tank by themselves or with vey docile tank mates.
With that information, I may pass on this one. I wasn't too concerned about the other fish as competitors (since I would be willing to give em the extra attention), but if they're getting stressed out, then that's another story. Thanks for sharing your experiences.
