PEmysis

I have been using PEmysis for about a little more than a month now and Im still uncertain about it.

I have noticed an oil film on the top of the water that I NEVER noticed before. It may be from it or may not.

Has anyone else had any issues with PEmysis like higher phosphates, nitrates or oils.

I have been rinsing it and let it sit in freshwater for a few minutes and then rinse it and then feed.

I feed about 2-3 times a week. rest of the weeks they roam the tank for leftovers and algea.

I have found PE mysis to be one of the cleanest forms of high protein food available for my larger fish. The packing/freezing is very clean with little to zero frozen 'juices' that lead to high phosphates/nitrates/etc. Just clean and pure frozen delectable shrimp.

I feed PE mysis twice as day and sometimes a third on the weekends. I have noticed "an oil" , but I believe it is a fatty oil that is residual from the shrimp. I wash mine out a few different time before it goes in the tupperware. I repeat this every 2-3 days.

I feed misis every day. I used to not rince it and i had a TON of oily residue on the surface. Even after i increased the flow and raised the water level a little to add more surface tension at the overflow, it was still oily. Then i started to rinse my mysis and POOF, it was gone in a day or so. Someone posted a picture of non-rinsed mysis in a small container (I think Marko9?) and yuck! very cloudy water.

I get mine from John at YR.....

I have noticed it get cloudy in the bowl during rinsing.... Also the shrimp turned a kinda rust red/brown color once I opened it.

Ill try rinsing mine some more

Yeah, I just started feeding PE this month. The fish LOVE it, but there is residual oil (no biggie, my Tunzes and skimmer make short work of it). But one thing I have noticed is that there seems to be a residual smell as well. It comes and goes, but I swear I get a wiff of it from time to time when I'm standing by my tank.

I haven't noticed any phosphate increase or nitrates though... just fat fish :D

BTW, I don't wash it, and I also mix it with cyclop-eze and angel formula.

I usually mix up a cocktail of mysis, brine, squid, and finely chopped krill. Mix and rinse well, add a couple drops of garlic extract to taste, and serve frozen. Rave reviews!

I never really noticed an oily film, but it could be because I rinse all my marine foods before feeding.

So you defrost, mix together and then refreeze?

I've used it for 27 days now , and i have never noticed anything you guys are talking about. I've never really noticed anything that looks like oil. I just mix a cube in a cup with my sump saltwater and feed it to my fish.
Well its time to feed the fish so I'll go see what you guys are talking about.

Did we not discuss this the other day people!! Must I remind you.....

the catchy little trade name you are incorrectly refrerring is shorthand for Pristine Engergenics Mountain-lakes Inland Yield Superior Inland Shrimp, or P.E. M.Y.S.I.S. for short and should be capitalized when referring to this product name as it is an acronym!!!

I did not get off my lazy butt the other day, walk 20 ft over to the refrigerator to read the package for nothing!!!! We shall all benifit from my hardwork and sacrifice and NEVER, EVER make this grammatical error again!!!

I love the stuff, combined with a BB tank makes keeping a Mandrain Dragonet just about fool proof. I have kept mine alive over a year using PE mysids. He's a fat guy too. Good for anenome as well, remember that 18" diameter Sebae I had......thats what he ate. As far as the guts and juices from the little guys.........coral food is what I consider it as.

So other people are getting that "fishy" smell in their tank? I started feeding PE Mysis a few weeks ago. Now I am noticing the oily residue as well as fishy smell.
(there is a joke that is screaming to be told right there)

I will have a brick or two at the xmas raffle. If anyone wonders how big a brick is... thats 40 OZ. baby... I feed my 240 a brick a month... 2.5 pounds of EXCELLENT fish food...

I've heard many a speaker (Okay, I've heard Mike Paletta and Anthony Calfo) say how important they feel it is to rinse mysid shrimp before adding it to your tank. The saying goes that "the phosphates are off the chart" in the rinse water. I decided to find out exactly how much phosphate you're adding to your tank every time you feed mysids unrinsed.

Using a spectrophotometer at work we're able to get a precise measure of the phosphate content in water. I drew off samples of seawater from liter flasks that had 10g of mysids swirled in them for 30 seconds. The mysids were thawed out in seawater for 5 minutes, then either rinsed or not rinsed. The rinsed mysids were strained through window screening. It should be noted that this removes many small particles but leaves all whole shrimp. I repeated this for each treatment 10 times and got pretty consistent results. What I found is that a 10g portion of rinsed mysid shrimp (size of a typical cube) will raise the phosphate level of 100g of seawater approximately 0.001 ppm. The same portion of non-rinsed mysids will raise the phosphate level of 100g of seawater about 0.005 ppm. Delbeek and Sprung suggest keeping your level of phosphate below 0.045 ppm.

Keep in mind this does not mean your tank will necessarily have an elevated phosphate level this much higher after you feed mysis! There are other external sources of phosphate, and exports of it, in a reef tank filled with animals, GFO, skimmer, etc. It is impossible to predict what effect a small feeding of mysis will have on the phosphate level of a dynamic system like a reef tank. It is, however, useful information to start with if you are considering whether or not to rinse. IMhO.

Yep! I freeze them into little cubes to make feeding easier.

Are you worried about losing nutritional value when you re-freeze the food?
