peppermint shrimp

I just wanted to pool together everyone's results if they have kept peppermint shrimp and clams together. I've heard that sometimes their okay and sometimes their not. Aiptasias have been winning the battle with me over the past few months and I think I may try getting a couple peppermints to see if they'll help. It's gotten to the point where I would rather have peppermints that are eating aiptasias than the clams if that's what it comes down to. I don't want to try a CBB because of mixed results with keeping them alive and I don't think my purple tang would help matters.

i got pepperments in my tank with my t. crocea... they were curious as hell when i put the clam in...but now they just go around it....never seemed to bother it at all....

i'm just worried about my emerald crab.... anyone have results with these bothering clams??? i haven't seem him anywhere near the clam..but still just a lil worried...

Peppermint shrimp do not seem to help with aptasia! I have not had this problem myself, but some of my friends have had this. You might want to try a search on the forums for a cure for this problem. I have heard that Kalk with freshwater in a syringe will kill them.

I have heard that Kalk with freshwater in a syringe will kill them.

Been using that method since day 1 and it doesn't work for me. I've tried shooting some on the tentacles and letting them take it in, injecting them with kalk paste, injecting them with boiling kalk paste, injecting them with boiling water, and injecting them with vinegar. No matter what I do they seem to come back within a week and bring a bunch of babies with them. Right now I'm estimating that I have about 500 of them in my tank(mostly tiny ones). This is with me going aiptasia hunting on pretty much a weekly basis.

my peppermint eats any and EVERY apitasia in my tank. i had a few on a clam i got and he took them out w/in 2 min of the clam being in there :D

i have worried about him getting at my clam since he picks on my closed brain but i have been target feeding the shrimp to keep him full enough to hopefully NOT bother my clam!!

Lunchbucket: I saw that pic on your site a while back. Pretty cool that goes for the aiptasias as soon as you put them in the tank.

For now I'm just going to try a CBB (got my fingers crossed hoping I can keep it alive). If that doesn't work I'll try a couple berghias. If that still doesn't work then I'll try some peppermints.

Keep the thread going anyways. Still interested in hearing other people's results.

I'm thinking of getting some pepermint shrimp to control some hard to reach aips. BUT I've heard that they will munch on other things too, llike zoanthids.

Has anyone has an experience with them in that regard?

No way, man! I have at least 3 pepps in my tank & they have never been a problem. I think that people confuse peppermints & camel back shrimp (I'm not sure how - they look differnet enough).
There was an incident where a pepp was attacking a clam & 24hrs later it was dead but the concensus is that they can smell inverts that are close to death, & they try to get a jump on their scanvenging.
I have never seen a peppermint in my tank pick at any healthy inverts.
I put one in my sump to take care of a very hard to reach aiptasia & 3 days later it was eaten (2 days after that the peppermint got sucked into the Mag7!)
These guys are the easiest & cheapest way to go if you need to get rid of a few small aiptasia.
Did I mention I'm happy with my pepps?

I have pepermint shrimps and emerald crabs both dont bother my maximas or zoo's. Pep's are hit and miss - mines never even touch the apts ..

Lunch send me your ace I could sure use it :D

I have 2 Peppermint they are model citizens. They never have bothered my Crocea.

Yes they munch on Aiptasia

Another benefit is that they produce larvae continuously.

The macro alge i got for my fuge had some apitasia in it.(about 7 or 8) I put 2 peppermints in the fuge within 2 days the apitasia were gone.I moved one to my main tank and he's never touched the clam or zoo's.The pep in the sump eats shrimp pellets and flake when i put it in there.when my zoo's get out of control i frag and throw them in the sump in a rubble bowl till they attach and the pep in the sump never touches them
