PEPPIE's ODD-BALL BUILD

Thanks all for the kind words.
I had some projects I needed to take care of and the holiday weekend got in the way of progress. I am back at it and will have some updates soon.
Thanks again. I hope to let people know, you dont have to do it like everybody else.

This is definitely one of the most interesting tank/canopy builds I have ever seen. Great Job! Following along.

Thanks to all for the good words.
The title is very fitting. LOL
I have started on the stand. No pics yet. I will be using the existing stand. It will have a face lift. New doors and face frames on two sides. It will look to be a built in.
I will get some pics up soon.
Thanks,
Peppie

Ive got an update. and some more pics.
I started on the rockscape. I know I dont even have water in the tank yet, but this is not your regular add sand add water add rock type of build.
Being I have limited tank space I need to utilize what space I have.
This method is nothing new to the aquarium hobby.
I had built some foam rock walls for a couple of nanos I had in the past. I saved them.

I cut them up into smaller pieces.

I will connect them with acrylic rod. I just poked a 3/4'' hole in the rock piece and ran the rod thru it. Then I coated 3/4'' pvc with epoxy and crushed coral. I wll cut this into smaller pieces to slide over the acrylic rod and separate the rock pieces.

The base looks like this. I will set base rocks on in to keep it in place

All the parts are interchangeable. I will assemble them when I have water and the base rock in the tank

This is the background. I used Flat black, gloss blue and flat blue. It will be removable if I want to change color.

Many reefers have glued rocks to the side of their tanks. I wanted that look, but I wanted to be able to change the look or size of the hanging rock.
This is what I did
Drilled some holes for the bracket that will glue to the side of the tank
110_2974.jpg

Shaped and drilled some platforms
110_2975.jpg

Glued a rod to the platform
110_2985.jpg

The platform will swing in an arch while sitting in the bracket
110_2984.jpg

110_2982.jpg

I can change the look when I need to
110_2976.jpg

I made 8 of them and coated them with epoxy and crushed coral
110_2988.jpg

Found a survival blanket (mylar) and decided to line the under side of the lighting system with it.

One of the powerhead brackets that slide into a slot cut in the top tank bracing. ( the tank is 3/4'', magnets are rated 1/2'' or less)
110_2992.jpg

Ato float switch holder. One box for the main and one for the backup
110_2993.jpg

I made it adjustable to fine tune for the best water level in the fuge
110_2994.jpg

Powerhead stuck to the bracket

110_3000.jpg

ATO in place. I installed a fan that will come on and off with the light cycle of the fuge light

pmark,
Thanks, I think most people like to see lots of pics. They explain results better than my words.

talon4x4,
I like to think furniture can be very functional and look good doing it. People in this hobby spend thousands of $ on there tank to make it look good. Why not take the time and $ to provide an equally fine stand to compete the whole package.

dave on bass,
Yes it has been labor intense, I have had some time off work, that has made it easy to add all the small details that make this build unique.

Thanks for the good words guys. Its nice to see fellow reefers like my idea of an Odd-Ball build.

I got back to the shop this week. Decided I needed to refresh the top of my bench before the crud build up got out of hand. After about 5 hours of sanding and scraping I was able to put a coat of Poly on it. The next morning I smoothed it out with some 220 and added the second coat. Sunday afternoon I will lay down the finale coat.

There is still alot of work to do on the hood and stand facelift before I can post the finished system.
I started out with contrasting wood for the fake panels on the tank face frame. Well the boss didnt like the light color contrast so it was time do dig into my veneer stash to see if I had a darker wood. I found some figured Saple veneer and glued it to the previous panles. I also added another fake panel to the hood to balance out the look of the feeding door.

I used the same black wood to trim it out.

110_3097.jpg

Tools of choice. I find it easier to to use the hand saw and a jig for small trim

All glued up and oiled
