Perfect chain of events = wet floor

It started out yesterday when I was going to do a 20 gallon water change. I mixed the water & added it to my sump filling it almost up. I was going to suck out of the tank itself. One thing led to another & it got pushed back until tonight.

We got up this morning everything was good, left for inlaws for a day of Easter. Meanwhile we got a ton of rain. So the sump pump started running. Sometime during the day, the shut off got stuck so the sump pump overheated & tripped the breaker. So now we come home & there is 20 gallons of saltwater on my furnace room floor.

I am sure something like this has happened to almost everyone, just have to vent about my turn.

LOL ......be happy it's only 20 gallons man, I have dumped at least 100 on the basement floor just out of the tank...mainly cause I'm a moron and forget to shut the water off. That and everytime it has rained this spring we have had at least 40 gal plus on the floor

Sorry about the floor but I think your problem lies in your water change method. You will get a more efficient water change if you take a complete 20gals out of the tank and immediately replace it with 20gals of new saltwater which is mixed as close to your tank main tank parameters as possible. You may have the tops of a coral or two sticking out of the water a little but this is natural at low tide anyway. With adding the fresh saltwater then removing the same amount you are actually diluting your water change.
