It probably is not such a drastic reduction but anyone who lives near the sea or the great lakes or has camped on the Amazon or Orinoco can tell you at night the water level rises and the water calms. This is in reponse to the slight gravitational effect the moon has on the earth which pulls the Oceans(any large body of water) into a somewhat elliptical shape. The flow becomes more laminar and less turbulent but it probably is not greatly reduced. Plankton swarms and a feeding response is ellicited in many corals and other animals. I am not an expert but I have seen illustrations in science books demonstrating this effect and they basically show the earth is pulled into a somewhat oval shape by the forces of gravity the moon exerts on it. I think we slow it down so much because it is better for the feeding of our animals. It is really remarkable to see this in an aquarium, particularly in combination with moonlight simulation, it opens a whole new realm to reef keeping. One thing that I caution is pH drops at night and this can be exagerated by too great of a flow reduction. You just will have to try it and see everyones system is different. I had a friend using a Giesemann moonlight system and two 7410/2 on photocells and i swear I just about had to block his calls to get some sleep.
