phytoplankton

DT's is good because it is live.
I have read good things about Bioplankton.

FWIW I use DT's but am looking for an alternative.
If you can't get them locally you pay an arm and leg for shipping. Especially considering the price of the product.

May also want to look into culturing your own.
Apparently it is pretty easy.

what is the best kind to feed a maxiama clam. or what kind do you guys use

I have had tridacnid gigas clams live going on 10 years now ... never fed them a drop of phytoplankton or anything else for that matter ... once ... ever.

True they retain many of their "feeding" structures as Shimek points out, but what he neglects to mention is that these structures are also used for other things e.g. respiration, zooxanthellae collection and expulsion, ammonia expulsion, oxygen uptake, the list goes on and on. His further claim that every clam death is due to starvation and would be prevented by feeding is just another example of the kind of sweeping, dramatic statements he likes to throw out every now and then in his typical flambouyant style; most are based solely on conjecture and selective quoting of the scientific literature. :-) I think I will err on the side of experience and not on the side of someone with little to no experience in animal husbandry.

For a "starving" animal my clams seem to have done just fine thank you for the last 10 years. ;-)

Well, I imagine your 10yo T. gigas is larger than the <4 inch size where feeding is recommended. Relax man, have a beer.
:)
