A REAL Newbie Question

How much room/space should be allowed horizontally and vertically?

Peaceful coral?

Semi aggressive coral?

Aggressive coral?

Thanks John

It all depends on the types of corals you are keeping. Some can be right next to each other and others need to have at least 6" or more between in any direction. Just depends and there is no one answer fits all.

^^^+1 I let a piece of GSP get to close to some of my monti and the GSP eventually started growing over it. I had to pull as much of the GSP off as I could, then chisel the rest of and leave the monti behind. I think in the LPS or SPS sections there was a thread going about coral compatibility.

If you look up each coral on liveaquaria.com they tell you if it has aggressive sweepers that require more space around it. Also bear in mind that some soft corals release defensive compounds into the water when they get mad, so rather than stinging an intruder, they foul your water for everyone. It's nbd in the ocean, but can be a real problem in our little tanks.

Flow patterns will also influence stinging. Keeping likely stingers unmounted but stable on the locations they are to be mounted can allow a chance to observe their behavior.
