Plenum Help

i have a 100 gallon plenum and the sand right above the plenum (the anearobic sand) is depleted what should i do should i remove the aerobic sand then remove the grid above the anearobic sand then add in more sand to the sand bed on top of the plenum or what procedure should i take to replenish the sand?
