pre-preparing...a tank question

Hi all...I am interested in starting a mantis tank. I have 3 reef tanks already, but my question is:
If a filter is used, or if LR and sand is used for filtration, how exactly are you keeping problem algaes from forming and becoming a prob? If I put macro's in for this, and the mantis buries the algae or something, what route would I take then?
Just wondering what are the common methods used for mantis tanks to keep everything in check. Especially if they eat a lot and often.
