protein skimmer advise.

Hello all, first thanks to so many for the advise on building a refuguim and drilling my tank. I am in the proces of buying a small tank (20 gal or 29 gal) to try and build a one. My question, i seek advise on a good (but inexpensive, maybe used) protein skimmer for the sump. I had my eye on a hob skimmer that some gracioulsy (sp?) offered but with a refugium I may put one in the sump instead. any advise woudl be greatly apreciated. If some one has a used one for sale, please pm me. tks to all.

opps sorry, thats kinda important.. 75 gal. the vertical space under the tank/in the stand is about 23 inch

I purchased a Euro-Reef a while back and really like it, they are nice skimmers, they are not the cheapest, maybe you might like a octopus instead, they are quality skimmers and aren't very expensive either

Euro reefs are awesome skimmers i have a cs 6-2 with a sedra 500 and every three to five days i have to empty my cup and it produces nasty skinmate.

How much space do you have available for the base of the skimmer? That might help some people determine if they have something that will fit. I just sold my other Euro Reef RS-80. :(

+1 for the Euro Reefs though. I also like them but sold mine for a Schuran JetSkim and haven't regretted it since. :D

ekrunch, the footprint is not a problem, waiting for skimmer before i finish the refugium, as for the heigth, i have about 25 inches total.. tks

It is if the skimmer is 24"x24"! :D I'm just trying to get an idea of what size skimmer you're looking for and what your max space is. My Schuran JetSkim 150 has a small footprint but because of the way the gate valve sticks out and how the pump attaches it requires more footprint than it says in the manual.

So are you saying that you're going to build a chamber for whatever size skimmer you find and then use the rest for a fuge? Are you looking for any style in particular like an in-sump, external, recirc, or HOB?

Don't skimp on the skimmer.

The Reef Octopus from Reef Depot is the best bang fo the buck.

You can also try to DYI one.

+1 Mcliffy's post. they all offer room for improvement. If you aren't willing to do any mods get the MSX, IMO.

sorry forgot to add if you wait a few weeks you can get the MSX skimmer from Octopus. They are doing the same Sicce pump skimmer only with a redesigne(supposidly better) venturi and cheaper.
