Protein Skimmer Help, OctopusSKimmer

I have an octopus skimmer and they seem to be very finicky.....u have to have the skimmer at the right water depth and the right water level inside the skimmer....u can check with the sponsor here on RC....Coralvue

The water height should be at the wavy line that is half way up the neck, just below the cup. It will take several days to a month or more - - oh wait I see another wavy line!

Yeah, someone else will have to tell you the appropriate water height. But it'll take some time to break-in. I had an eshopps skimmer (pos) that took almost 2 months to break-in.
 
there are 2 wavy line stickers, one says lowest water level which im at now. the second wavy line says highest water level, im assuming my water level can be inbtween those 2 wavy lines.
 
Your water level is too high. The level they mean by the stickers on the skimmer is the level inside the skimmer. You need to raise the skimmer so the water level is about 5.75-6" from the bottom of the skimmer

Pay attention to it for a few days. It all depends how you want it to skim. If you want it on the dry side leave the bubbles lower, say halfway to bottom of the neck. If you want it wet where you have to empty it every day, leave them closer to the top of the neck.

I like to empty my skimmer once a week when it's nice and black, so I leave the bubble about 1/2" into the neck.
 
best thing to do is run the skimmer wide open(exit ppe or valve completely open) for now. Over the course of a day or more(depends on tank) your skimmer with start to froth up. Once you have foamy froth you then can start to tune the skimmer by slowly raising the water height. Raise the height a little then a few hours later check on it and continue to raise slowly till you get to the height you want. Typically you will want thw skimmer to start produce foam from the bottom of the collection cup on up to about 1/2 way btween the collection cup bottom and top of neck.
 
Mine took a month to break in. During this time, I ran it a little lower to get some skimming done. When it clearly overflowed, I lifted it at the height the manufacturer said.
But you don't tell if your tank is new. If so, you may have very little to skim for a while.
 
ok last question what water height do u all recommend, i was given advice on 6" would be best? i just wanna see what everyone thinks, i dont know whats right or wrong or what works. im around 9" now.. skimmer says it can sit in 6-10"s
 
6-10 is fine, the key is making sure that the outlet is not under water. I run mine at 10 (nwb200) and have no issues. They break in fast IMHO and if cleaned skim an excellent amount of gunk from your system.
 
I have mine in 6" of water. You will actually see another "bubble line" in the upper body to an inch or so below your current "bubble line". (Makes sense huh?) I have the lower bubble line set about an inch above where the collection cup assembly joins with the skimmer body. You will see the lower bubble line (it is actually the line where the turbulence subsides and the bubbles start going vertical) better with a back light (a small flashlight pointed from the back to the front).
 
ok i need help again, i finally changed my water level in my sump its exactly at (6 1/8") so 6" an its making weird sounds does it need to break in again it sounds like its stuggling like it cant start the normal hummmmm of skimming. does it need to go through a break in again?
