Protein Skimmer water level?

How much of a difference does this make?

I just put the Reef Octopus SSS-NWB-150, a space saver skimmer in my sump.

The water level is set to all the way open, as per the setup video from Marine Depot I watched to set it up.

It is foaming up at the moment, but I can't find anything telling me me what the water level should be. Is it fine to just leave it all the way open?

Seems to be foaming up fine...

Ahh, it was referring to sump water level.

It says recommend max is 8.7" and mine is 9.5"

What kind of problems will that cause, if any?

You might have better luck over in the equipment section - that's a reasonably popular skimmer so you will get answers from people running the same model.

I believe ReefOctopus say the level is fine as long as the gate valve is not completely submerged.

Since you're getting foam already, I think all is well, can just leave it be. However, if you find the skimmer is not stable/producing good skimmate after a couple of weeks, you might want to raise the skimmer about 1" in the tank. You can do that with eggcrate or a little acrylic or plastic stand.

Happy reefing!

You want the bubbles in your skimmer to be right at the bottom of the neck of the collection cup not the collection cup itself but where the cup connects to the skimmer. If the bubbles are to high you will skim very wet and not build up the foam head properly. If the are a little above the neck its ok but if they are high up near the cusp of the cup you will have problems. My wording isn't the best hope that helps.

higher the water outside the skimmer naturally will try to come up at same level inside the skimmer. Thus if water level is higher than recommendation you will run into very wet or less effective skimmer.

This is what my skimmer looksl ike:

The water is at the base of the white foam....but the foam isn't reaching into the collection cup.

This means I should have more water in the sump, right?

Would move this to equipment section but can't, will post there next time.

Yes or close the gate valve a little bit until it moves up. If you add more water to the sump make sure you have enough room for water when you turn off the pumps
