Keep in mind that this is an expensive hobby and it might be easier in the long run to buy one.

If you want some middle ground check out the Avast CS1. Should work with your system volume and it is a kit so you still get the build satisfaction. Check out the reviews on-line. I wanted to use one but the footprint was too large for my sump. A friend started using his last month and it is working great.

So you have that picture - now close your eyes and see it in PVC. Back in the day we made these to be run with an airstone. With a little creativity and some glue you can make a fair replica from common fittings.

Of course, there are used skimmers to consider also. A semi-local to me guy has a decent recirculation skimmer for sale quite cheap. By the time you have the parts and pumps, you are already in the used skimmer neighborhood.

Building your own can be rewarding - figuring things out has merit.

Best of luck which ever path you choose.

I'm pretty cheap and build everything I can myself. When I researched skimmers I learned a lot about design. When it comes the reef octopus skimmers just the bubble blaster pump alone cost $180. When you subtract that from price of the skimmer it is really not that expensive. Once you get it home and see how high quality it is built it starts looking Like a piece of artwork and yoy think you got a bargin. A week later you go to dump it out and the smell reminds you that it is just a poop collector.

The majority of store bought skimmers can not match the numbers a simple air driven counter current DIY skimmer.
You need to do a little math but the numbers are there.
It is just not how much gunk it skims. It is all about the bombardment rate and dwell time.

well thanks for the info. i got offered a couple of sea clone skimmers for nothing there in sump design. so i think i will go with them to see how they work as there not costing me any thing. also getting a Kenya tree coral frag with them as well. i think it s a pretty sweet deal for nothing. lol.
