Pump question

Was wondering can a Iwaki or similar pump draw water from over the side of a sump? I am using a 55g glass tank as a diy sump and it is not drilled and really don't wanna. Is it possible to have an intake pipe over the side into the return side of the sump and pump it back to the tank? How much head pressure do yall think I'll lose. hard plumbing will be a minimal amount.

that should work fine. put a screen on the intake in the sump.

Once it is primed, it will work fine. You shouldn't lose very much. Use a larger intake hose than you normally would. Closed loop pumps work this same way.
