It's kind of unnofficial cause guiness wasn't at my house... But I (was) planning on using a mag7 as a sump return pump.. It was so loud my neighbor came over within 10 minutes and asked what the loud piece of... ... machinery... was in my house. No I'm not joking. This must be the loudest possible piece of gear ever sold for home aquarium... and the walls aren't that thin either. Functionally it was working fine, but as loud as a aircraft carrier flight deck... TOTALLY unnacceptable. And I VERY HIGHLY recommend taking a pass on these pumps when any of you are in the market for one.

don't know whats wrong with yours, but have owned several and right now have one mag7 running my calcium reactor and its dead silent externally,
even though they should only be used submerge because they are not true external pumps.
have a few that are as old as 8+ yrs and running great, why not send it to get it repair,
just do a quick search and you will see the many people that are satisfied by them,

I would have to disagree with you unit91. I've used a mag drive 7 on my etss reef devil skimmer and a mag drive 18 on my 150 gal tank as a return pump and can't hear a thing. Are you using this as an external pump application? I'm currently using it in sump. I've owned 4 mag drive pumps and couldn't be happier with them. Just IMO.

My Mag 7 is a little loud but i start it on and off couple times and it quite down considerably. It is not the most durable pump also i need to change the front cover and impeller often because the robber grommet eats down the front cover center hole where the impeller grommet goes.
I also have to disagree with unit91. I have had 2 mag drives, one 5 and currently a 9.5. They were both submerged in my sump with no noise at all. For the price you can't beat a mag drive.
Where did you purchase from? Maybe there is a defect in the pump for one reason or another, and where you purchased it from will work with you on exchanging it.

Either a defect or the piping is resonnating on something. I would take a look at your plumbing before I would throw out the pump. Any where the piping touches a "hollow box" like the hood of an aquarium can turn into a guitar of sorts and turn the mechanical vibrations into accustic vibrations (sound) via resonation. I have a mag 12 running external on a OM squirt and it is nearly soundless, I still have a few pipes to isolate.
Hello all... Well there certainly are a few of you out there that have actually been fortunate enough to have these things actually work out for you. I was using it in sump and have since called my LFS for their opinion/input... Their response was... "No, it's not gonna be quiet, but it's also cheaper than all the rest." I think I'm going to have to echo the sentiments of sjm817 here... I'm just gonna exchange it for a better pump... either Eheim 1262 or a Poseiden PS2

I am with sjm817 on the Eheim 1260. The Eheim is silent and pressure rated so you dont have to use 1 inch or larger pvc like with the Mag to get proper flow. Haven't used a 1262 but I bet it pushes some water. Danner must have bad QC because there are some quiet Mag drive pumps out there. Poseiden PS2 are dead silent but run hot.

9.5 mag rated at 950g by maker 93w $69
allstar.h2o, sorry to disappoint, eheim is not pressure rated, is after all a flow pump just like mags
to other readers, mag are decent pumps at a very competitive price, buy from a good supplier and if it just issues send it back and it will be replace, if you don't have receipt or bad mediocre supplier, them contact them at http://www.dannermfg.com/

Ditched Mags for Eheims here too. Quieter, cooler, and nowhere near the flow loss with head or smaller plumbing diameter. Either Mag or Eheim provides good bang for the buck.
Well worth the extra few $$
Key word being "rated". real world is very different. Mag pumps are rated using plumbing that is double the outlet size. They fall flat on their face in the head loss area. An Eheim with 3/4" plumbing will outflow (by a lot) a Mag with the required 1.5" fire hose. Add in the cost and the PITA factor for having to plumb a Mag up.

I agree that they are a good bargain pump. They are very reliable and dont have start up problems like some of the other bargain pumps, but if you want a quiet pump that performs well under pressure, there are better choices.
I put Eheim in the same class as Tunze and Deltec. Yes, they cost a bit more and are well worth it.
