a skimmer removes proteins in the water before they have a chance to break down into nitrogenous waste, A biowheel is part of a filter that the filtered water runs across, turning the wheel and it's just a place for the benificial Nitrifying bacteria to colonize, since it's getting plenty of air, it's usually one of the best places for the bacteria to colonize in Freshwater aquariums, it's not recommended for saltwater, rather live rock and live sand.
A sump is a remote area under you tank. It is a good place to place heaters, skimmers, A deep sand bed, a refugium along with your return pump. A sump is feed with an overfolw system. The overflow can be a built in predrilled type or a hang on the back type if your tank is not drilled.
